Famous Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, who made films like Satan’s Legs, Damnation and Werkmeister Harmony, has died at the age of 70.

The European Film Academy announced the news, saying that Tarr died on January 6 after a long and serious illness.

The statement issued by the Academy said – ‘The European Film Academy expresses its condolences on the demise of an outstanding director and a personality with a strong political voice.

He was deeply respected not only by his colleagues but also by audiences around the world. The bereaved family appeals for sympathy from the media and people and requests that no statement be sought from them in these difficult days.

Let us tell you that Tar was known for his experimental, dark and black and white films. He used to present life in a new way to the common people. He used to show rural Hungarian life in his films.

Béla Tarr was born in 1955 and started his career at the Balazs Béla Studio, one of the largest studios in Hungary.

He released his first feature film ‘Family Nest’ in 1977, a dark social drama about a young family living in communist housing.

In 1982 he graduated from the Academy of Theater and Film in Budapest and founded Tarsulas Film Studio, where he worked until the studio’s closure in 1985.

Bela Tarr first gained international fame in 1988 with her feature film ‘Damnation’, which was based on erotic obsession in a Hungarian mining town. The film was an adaptation of the novel by Nobel Prize-winning Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai.

Tar also won the Best Youth Film Award at the European Film Awards for the film ‘Damnation’.

Tar had made a total of nine films between 1979 and 2011. Apart from this, he had made a tele film named ‘Macbeth’ and also produced some documentaries and short films.

Tar retired from film making in 2011 and ran his own film school called Film Factory in Sarajevo.

Apart from his films, Tar was quite vocal politically. Tar was a critic of nationalism. In an interview in 2016, he had called Trump a shame for the United States.
