Film producer Firoz Nadiadwala has filed a fraud complaint at Amboli Police Station in Mumbai regarding the copyright and remake rights of the film Hera Pheri, released in 2000. According to India Today report, Nadiadwala said in the complaint that the dispute is related to the 1989 Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking, on which Hera Pheri was based. He claimed that in the year 2000, he had legally purchased some remake rights from Suresh Kumar Singhal for Rs 4.5 lakh. The complaint said that seven days before the release of the film, some people tried to extort money from him by putting pressure on him. According to Nadiadwala, he had to make the payment due to the fear of huge investment and possible loss, even though the court had given a stay order in his favor. Police registered a case. Nadiadwala also alleged that in 2022, parties associated with the original film re-sold the already sold rights. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Gopala Pillai Vijayakumar and M Paul Michael. Additionally, he received a legal notice in December 2024, which again stated that the manipulation was illegal and demanded Rs 60 lakh along with 25% share in the film’s profits. Nadiadwala also said that his company’s public listing process was being hampered and false news was spread using the names of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal, which damaged his professional image. In this case, the police have started preparations to call the concerned parties for questioning.
