Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott speaking at the NDTV World Summit on Friday.

Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday that the 21st century belongs to India. The Prime Minister of this country can take the responsibility of ‘Leader of the Free World’ from America in the coming four or five decades.

Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, Abbott said, ‘US President Donald Trump has behaved wrongly by imposing heavy tariffs on India.’ He said, ‘America had tried to correct this mistake in the last 20 years, but these tariffs are a big blow.’

Abbott also targeted the growing US-Pakistan relations. He said America’s interests lie in strong friendship with a democracy like India, not Pakistan.

Abbott said, ‘Pakistan supported America on terrorism, but gave shelter to Osama bin Laden for a decade. There are good people in Pakistan, but India is different. America should work with Pakistan, but it is important to know who are better friends.

According to Tony Abbott, India is no longer just an emerging economy but could become the center of ‘democratic world leadership’ in the coming decades.

India has three big strengths – democracy, law and English language

Abbott said that India has three big strengths, democracy, rule of law and English language. Abbott further said that the free trade agreements signed between India and Australia in 2022 and recently with Britain are indications that the democratic world is now distancing itself from China.

India is preparing to take the same economic and military leap that China took a few decades ago. Abbott said that China wants to dominate the world and it is a threat to its neighboring countries. He said, ‘China wants to become a hegemonic power.’

India is facing the highest US tariff in the world at 50%

The Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on Indian exports in August, the highest in the world. This includes an additional penalty of 25 percent on oil purchases from Russia.

Trump has many times claimed that Russia promotes war in Ukraine with the money received from India’s oil purchases.

Trump has imposed a total of 50 tariffs on India so far. There is a 25% reciprocal i.e. tit-for-tat tariff and a 25% penalty on purchasing oil from Russia.

Reciprocal tariffs came into effect from August 7 and penalties from August 27. According to White House Press Secretary Carolina Levitt, its purpose is to put secondary pressure on Russia, so that it can be forced to end the war.
