Meanwhile, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka also paid tribute on Martyr’s Day and said that 216 policemen were martyred last year. Since independence, 36,468 policemen have been martyred till now.

Martyrs’ Day is celebrated every year on 21 October at the National Police Memorial. It is usually headed by the Union Home Minister. During this, Central Empowered Police forces along with Delhi Police parade together.

Why is Martyr’s Day celebrated? On 21 October 1959, Chinese troops with heavy weapons attacked the Hot Springs in Ladakh. 10 brave policemen were martyred in this. Since then Martyr’s Day is celebrated on 21st October. It is also called Police Memorial Day.

Prime Minister Modi had dedicated this National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi in honor of the martyrs on Martyr’s Day 2018. Memorial police forces are a symbol of national identity, pride and history. The memorial is a 30-foot-tall granite statue. It also includes the ‘Wall of Bravery’ and a museum.

NPM is open all days except Monday. The Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) parades here every Saturday and Sunday in the evening, one hour before sunset.
