Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he is ready to negotiate with Ukraine for a settlement in the war. According to news agency Reuters, Putin has said that India, China or Brazil can mediate between the two countries.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEZ) in the Russian city of Vladivostok, Putin said that when the war started in 2022, Turkey had tried to broker a compromise between the two countries. However, those conditions were never implemented. Now the previous attempt can be used as a basis to start fresh talks.

Zelensky had said- Peace summit can be organized in India
Putin’s statement came after PM Modi visited Russia on 8 July, about 2 months ago. Here he discussed with Putin about stopping the war. Shortly after this, PM Modi also visited Ukraine on 23 August. During this time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his desire to hold a second peace summit in India.

At the same time, in the meeting with Zelensky, PM Modi had said, ‘India has always been in favor of peace. I met Russian President Putin a few days ago. Then I looked into his eyes in front of the media and said that this is not the time for war.’

Putin’s conditions for stopping the war
Earlier, a month after the war started in February 2022, several rounds of talks were held between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, the capital of Turkey. Its purpose was to stop the war. According to media reports, Russian President Vladimir Putin had laid down two conditions to stop the war.

He had said that Ukraine would have to withdraw its troops from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. Apart from this, Ukraine would never become a part of NATO. However, Ukraine refused to accept these conditions.

It has been two and a half years since the Russia-Ukraine war started on 24 February 2022. Meanwhile, 10 thousand civilians of Ukraine have died so far, while 18,500 people have been injured. Ukraine claims that Russia has lost 3.92 lakh soldiers. Meanwhile, the US has imposed sanctions on 500 Russian companies.

In the Russia-Ukraine war, this happened for the first time on 6 August 2024 when Ukraine entered Russia and captured its Kursk region. Since then Ukraine has been continuously attacking Russia. According to RT’s report, 31 Russian citizens have lost their lives in Ukraine’s attacks in 20 days.

This is the first time since the Second World War that a foreign power has occupied Russian soil. Ukraine occupied 1263 square km of Russian territory in two weeks. Ukraine claims that it has occupied more land in 2 weeks than Russia occupied in 8 months of 2024.
