Union Minister Piyush Goyal accused the Congress of making election commissioners governors and Union ministers during its rule. He questioned whether giving Padma Vibhushan to MS Gill when he was Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was not a bribe.
Referring to past decisions of the Congress, Goyal alleged that the party gave political posts to former Chief Election Commissioners and election officials later. He said that Congress raises questions on the Election Commission when it loses the elections, but when it wins, it says the election process was correct.
Goyal asked 10 questions to Rahul Gandhi and challenged him to provide evidence on the allegations of vote theft and file an affidavit before the Election Commission. He said- For the last few days, we have been seeing the behavior of Rahul Gandhi, his double standards and childish actions. Congress questions the impartiality of the Election Commission, but forgets its old record.
Piyush Goyal’s 10 questions to Rahul Gandhi
1. Why was the affidavit not given on the allegations of vote theft?
Rahul Gandhi talks about vote theft every day. Criticizes the Election Commission and uses strong words for it. But despite repeated requests, he did not file a single affidavit before the Election Commission. If they have evidence, present it and confirm their allegations under oath.
2. Why remained silent during SIR in Bihar?
If Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was such a big problem, then why did Rahul Gandhi remain silent during it in Bihar? Why didn’t he raise his voice then? Why did Congress not file a single claim for addition or deletion of names during the SIR process in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal? Where was Congress at that time?
3. Why questions on the appointment of election commissioners?
Earlier the government used to appoint election commissioners. There was no consultation or discussion with anyone. The government appointed whoever it wanted as the Election Commissioner or Chief Election Commissioner. In 2023, PM Modi’s government brought a new law. Under this, the Leader of Opposition was also made a member of the selection committee. Now the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition together decide who will become the Election Commissioner and who will be the Chief Election Commissioner.
4. Why did Congress leaders praise SIR?
If the Congress really believes that there are irregularities in the SIR, then how can it, when it wins, say that the Election Commission is doing a good job and the elections were fair, but when it loses, it says that there were irregularities in the elections?
Shashi Tharoor, Ramesh Chennithala and Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan gave statements regarding SIR. Adhir Ranjan Choudhary also said that the elections in West Bengal were conducted in a proper and fair manner. Congress can never win public trust by telling lies again and again. Rahul Gandhi is the biggest red flag for Congress.
5. Why did Tikaram Meena get a place in the Congress committee?
Former Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala Tikaram Meena was later included in the manifesto committee of the Congress in Rajasthan and made a member of the party.
6. Ratan U. Why was Kelkar made Secretary to the Chief Minister?
Ratan U. Kelkar was the Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala. Within a month of the May 2026 elections, he will be appointed by Chief Minister V.D. Satisan was appointed secretary. Is this not a political transaction? Isn’t this the message that help us in the elections and we will give you the post?
7. Was giving Padma Vibhushan to MS Gill when he was CEC a bribe?

9. Why was RK Trivedi given the Governor ticket and TN Seshan given the ticket?
RK Trivedi’s tenure as Chief Election Commissioner ended on 31 December 1985. On 26 February 1986, Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress government appointed him the Governor of Gujarat.
Congress praised TN Seshan for his honesty and fearlessness, but in 1999, the party gave him a ticket to contest elections against LK Advani. Was it not like rewarding them?
10. Why were questions raised regarding the appointment of Naveen Chawla?
Newspapers and TV footage from 2005 said that Sonia Gandhi appointed Naveen Chawla as the Election Commissioner. Sonia Gandhi did not hold any government post, so in what capacity was she deciding who should be given which post?
A Chief Election Commissioner had complained that the Election Commissioner working under him was acting like an agent of the Congress. Despite this, the Congress government did not remove him.
