Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar meets Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand
PM Modi met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand at his office in South Block on Monday. The Prime Minister discussed business, energy, technology, agriculture and cooperation between the two countries.
PM Modi wished Canadian PM Mark Carney and talked about looking forward to the upcoming meetings.
The Prime Minister’s Office said that this visit of Foreign Minister Anand will further strengthen the relations between the two countries. The Prime Minister said that he looks forward to meeting Prime Minister Carney soon.
Earlier, a joint statement was issued after the meeting of the foreign ministers of India and Canada. The statement said that a roadmap was prepared on many issues between the two countries. Both ministers said that a strong partnership is essential in times of global economic uncertainty and stress.
Expressed satisfaction on bilateral trade
The ministers expressed satisfaction at the bilateral trade reaching $23.66 billion in 2024. Indian and Canadian companies are rapidly expanding trade in each other’s markets.
Considering trade as the basis of economic development, both sides decided to begin ministerial discussions soon.
The Canada-India CEO Forum will be relaunched, providing recommendations on clean tech, infrastructure, agri-food and digital innovation. This Forum will take place during the Senior Trade Mission in early 2026.
Both countries will increase cooperation to deal with climate change
Both countries will increase cooperation to deal with climate change. Will share information in areas like environmental protection, new energy, reducing carbon from heavy industries, stopping plastic pollution. This will also increase economic growth and jobs.
Canada-India Ministerial Level Energy Discussion will be resumed in the energy sector. Cooperation will increase on LNG, LPG trade, oil-gas exploration, clean technology, green hydrogen, biofuels, carbon capture, electric vehicles. Both countries will share best practices on power system management, emissions reduction, digitalization, disaster management.
Will work to increase energy efficiency at forums like G20. Canada’s mining expertise will provide important minerals to India. Discussions will continue on nuclear energy cooperation and uranium supply. The Critical Minerals Annual Colloquium will take place in Toronto in March 2026.
Cooperation in AI and digital sector
Both the countries have decided to cooperate with each other in AI and digital fields. There will be partnership to increase AI reach. Canadian AI companies to participate in India’s AI Impact Summit in February 2026
Focus on increasing food security, trade, productivity in agriculture sector. There will be cooperation on increasing farmers’ income, sustainable supply chain, agri-value chain improvement, nutritional security, energy-compost from agricultural waste, climate-resilient agriculture.
promote tourism
Both countries will work on education, tourism, cultural exchange, professional mobility to strengthen communication between people. New partnerships in higher education and research, research on emerging technologies such as AI, cyber security, fintech. Canadian universities to open campuses in India. Will reactivate the Higher Education Joint Working Group.
The High Commissions and Consulates of both the countries will increase expertise in economic, political, defence, technology sectors. This will restore trust and deepen cooperation. Cooperation will also increase on global issues, such as strengthening multilateral institutions.
