Dr. Hadas Levi with his child.
A woman in Israel gave birth to her partner’s child 1.5 years after his death. For this he has taken the help of Postmortem Sperm Retrieval (PSR) technique.
Dr. Hadas Levi, 35, gave birth to a son on June 11, 2025. Her partner and father of the child, Captain Netanel Silberg, died in Gaza on 18 December 2023.
Levi told that when he got the news of his fiance’s death, his first thought was that this could not be true and the second was that I want his child.
Levi says that now I can wake up in the morning and feel happy. This child is the answer to the enemy, I will not let my family branch break.

In PSR, sperm is extracted after death.
In PSR, sperm are extracted from the man’s body after death. This technique is especially used when the deceased person’s wife or partner wants to have a child in the future, but the deceased did not deposit it in a sperm bank during his lifetime.
It is part of artificial reproductive technology (ART) and is used with IVF (in vitro fertilisation).
Levy and Silberg were not married, so in 2024, Levy filed a petition in the Jerusalem Family Court to-
- She should be considered the ‘common-law partner’ of her fiancé.
- they should be allowed to use sperm
The court granted both the requests and later the IVF process was started.
How does the process happen?
- The doctor extracts liquid from the testicles through a needle, which contains sperm.
- If some sperm are alive, they are frozen.
- Sperm loses about 39% potency after freeze-thawing, but can be preserved for years.
Demand for PSR increased rapidly in Israel
According to media reports, after the Hamas attacks, the demand for postmortem sperm retrieval (PSR) suddenly increased in Israel.
According to Israeli Health Ministry-
- Sperm of 250 soldiers who died were collected.
- In 193 cases this request was made by their parents.
- Sperm was also collected from 21 citizens.
Sperm can only survive for 24–36 hours after a person’s death. Research shows that sperm potency decreases by approximately 2% every hour after death, so the process has to be done immediately. Earlier, parents needed court permission, but after the war the government temporarily eased this.

Appeal not to lose precious time
Epidemiologist Prof. Bela Savitsky talked to 600 men about this matter. He then revealed that 70% of Israeli men want to be asked at the time of joining the army whether they want to allow PSR or not, so that the family does not lose precious time.
Savitsky told that she herself has gone through this pain. His son Jonathan was killed on October 7 and by the time his body was found and the process began, 70 hours had passed, leaving the sperm unable to survive.
In July, a court allowed a mother to have a grandson through surrogacy using her murdered son’s sperm. The Israeli Health Ministry acknowledged that the issue raises many difficult questions related to law, medicine, religion, philosophy and ethics.
