Two Muslim women have been arrested in Pakistan’s Punjab province on charges of blasphemy. Both women have been accused of burning pages of the Quran. According to a PTI report, on Tuesday, the police have registered a case against both of them under section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The names of the women are Shahnaz Khan and Shazia Karamat. Shahnaz is the principal of a private school and Shazia works as a cook in her house. Both these women live in Rai Kala village of Kasur district, 50 km from Lahore. They have been arrested on the complaint of Kashif Ali, the imam of the village mosque.
The family left the village
According to the police, the village Imam had made an announcement from the mosque on August 10 accusing the two women of burning pages of the Quran. After this, the families of both the women have left the village. At present, the accused women are being questioned.
Police said that after this incident, a large police team reached there to prevent any untoward incident. Shahnaz Khan had hidden herself before the mob reached her school and home.

Last week, Christian sisters were accused of blasphemy
Last week, the Punjab police also registered a blasphemy case against two Christian sisters – Samia Masih and Sonia Masih – who are under 20 years old, for allegedly throwing a sack full of pages of the Quran outside their home on August 7.
Samiya and Sonia are residents of Gojra village in Toba Tek Singh district, 200 km from Lahore. In this case, Advocate Akmal Bhatti, President of Minority Alliance Pakistan, said that the allegations leveled against the Christian sisters are false.
21 churches were burnt in Pakistan last year
Last year, in Jaranwala in Pakistan’s Punjab province, fundamentalists set fire to 21 churches. After this incident on 16 August 2023, Christian houses were looted and set on fire. Fundamentalist groups had alleged that these churches were promoting blasphemy.
In this case, the police arrested 160 accused. 6500 policemen were deployed in Jaranwala. Media reports claimed that the police was present at the time of violence in Jaranwala, yet they did not take any action. Due to the riots, many countries around the world raised questions about the safety of minorities in Pakistan.
