Clashes broke out again on Tuesday night between Pakistan security forces and the Afghan Taliban. According to AP, tension has increased between the two sides on the border in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif had warned that there is a hostile environment with Afghanistan. Conflict can start any time in Islamabad and Kabul. Asif had said, the possibility of conflict cannot be ruled out. If Afghanistan threatens, we will respond immediately.

In this fight, both sides have claimed to have captured each other’s post. There is also news of damage to tanks. Pakistani state media accused the Taliban of firing the first shot without provocation.

At the same time, Afghanistan-backed social handle claimed that Afghan security forces have targeted those places in Pakistan which pose a threat to Afghanistan. Along with this, there was also talk of killing of 7 Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistan sources have claimed that many Taliban posts were heavily damaged in the attack by Pakistan and flames were seen rising from their posts.

Pakistani PTV News reported, ‘Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij opened fire without any reason in Kurram. The Pakistani army responded with full force.

It was claimed that a Taliban tank was destroyed in Pakistan’s retaliatory firing, forcing the attackers to abandon their posts and flee the area. At the same time, Kabul claims that it is responding to the violation of its airspace and sovereignty.

Two TTP groups came together in Afghanistan

Meanwhile, two factions of TTP in Afghanistan have announced their unity against Pakistan. According to reports, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has announced that its two groups are uniting.

One of them is led by Mufti Abdur Rehman of Kurram district, and the other is commander Sher Khan of Tirah Valley in Khyber district. Both these commanders have sworn loyalty towards TTP.

Afghanistan claims- 58 Pakistani soldiers killed

This clash started on 9 October. On the same day, there were air strikes on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) bases in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Taliban said that these attacks were carried out by Pakistan.

In response, Afghanistan attacked 25 military posts of Pakistan late on 11 October. Afghanistan claimed that its forces had killed 58 Pakistani soldiers.

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that Afghan security forces captured 25 military posts of Pakistan. In this action, 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed, while 30 others were injured.

Why fight between Pakistan and TTP?

  • After America’s attack on Afghanistan in 2001, Pakistan supported America. This angered TTP, who considered it against Islam.
  • TTP believes that the Pakistan government does not believe in true Islam, hence it attacks against it.
  • TTP has deep links with the Afghan Taliban. Both groups support each other.
  • After the Afghan Taliban came to power in 2021, Pakistan launched attacks in Afghanistan targeting TTP.
  • TTP exploits the grievances of the Pashtun community such as poverty, unemployment and government neglect.

There has been tension between the two countries before

There is a long standing dispute between Afghanistan and Pakistan regarding the Durand Line. Both countries keep accusing each other of attacks and hiding terrorists. Tension has increased further after Taliban took control of Afghanistan government in 2021.
