This is the story of a 44 year old man, Matt Potratz. 27 year old Matt was in the hospital bed. His family members and friends were surrounding his bed. Because the doctor had asked everyone to think about switching off the life support machines. According to family members, Matt had died on the way to the hospital. Tests at the hospital revealed that there was no activity in Matt’s brain. He was brain dead. He was kept on life support, which would now be removed.

Matt was buried in an avalanche in Idaho. Which made him fall down from a mountain and he was badly injured after colliding with a tree. Due to this blow his helmet burst and his windpipe was filled with ice. He remained buried under snow in this condition for five hours.
Doctor was about to announce death
Matt’s family and friends gathered around his bedside as doctors prepared to officially confirm his death. Everyone together placed their hands on Matt’s body and tearfully begged God for mercy.
Matt told that the family members had gathered there for about one and a half hour. Now everyone was about to accept the reality of my death, when a good friend of mine said that I don’t know why, but I feel like Matt knows we are here. Why don’t we see what happens if we try to get a reaction from him?
The friend yelled at Matt to come back.
Then his friend shouted – Matt, if you can hear me, open your eyes. Matt didn’t open his eyes, but his eyelids were clearly moving. Matt tells that the accident happened to him in March 2009. He was 27 years old then. He was a professional snowmobile athlete from Idaho. He then traveled to Western America and Canada to shoot films.
Matt said that I cycled professionally for film companies that made extreme rural films. Jumping from rocks, climbing slopes and did many other strange things. He doesn’t remember the avalanche. His comrades later filled the pit where Matt was buried. Matt told that my friends could only see my bright orange helmet sticking out of the snow.

Matt said that my friends came running to the place where I was buried under snow, dug up all the snow around them and thought that they had found me so quickly. Then all they found was an empty helmet. But, it was completely intact except for the chin strap. Neither I nor my helmet was inside.

The group used avalanche locator beacons to find Matt. They found my fingers sticking out of the snow. Then when several feet of snow was dug out, my ears, nose and mouth were completely filled with snow. My windpipe was blocked. He took one of my fingers and removed ice from my mouth and opened my windpipe.
Mant said that the rescue operation took five hours. Due to bad weather it was not possible to land the helicopter, so the ground crew had to carry it by sled. I had a broken neck, a broken femur, three broken ribs, a collapsed lung, broken facial bones and a severe brain injury.
Matt remained in the hospital for 88 days.
Matt spent 88 days in the hospital. He remained in coma for half of these days. Matt told that when I first came out of the coma, he gave me a pen and asked me to write my name. I couldn’t write. He asked me to write the alphabet. I couldn’t write. I was not able to write or speak any words. My condition had become like that of a child.
Matt had to re-learn how to read and speak with primary school flashcards and numbers, and also how to walk again. Physical recovery was slow, but emotional recovery was more difficult.
I knew I was athletic and strong, but knowing that in my mind and body I was no longer the same person was really depressing. The physical pain was also very severe.
ever thought of committing suicide
At one time the pain had brought him to the verge of suicide. Matt tells that one night I woke up and shouted, that’s it, now my job is over. I took out my snowmobile gear. My plan was to gear up, wear full riding gear from head to toe, drive to a nearby bridge, put the avalanche helmet back on my head, and jump.
But while getting dressed, the thought of her son Ethan stopped her. Then he fell on the bed crying. A year later, surgeons in Chicago performed an operation to relieve nerve pain. Sixteen years later, Matt has still not been able to heal his left arm from becoming completely paralyzed. Still the situation is much better than before.
