Today, the duo of Guddu and Kaushik has become a well-known name in the music world of Bollywood. Both of them composed the title track ‘Deewaniyat’ of the film Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat.
In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, both of them remembered their early days and told what challenges they had to go through to reach this point.
How was the journey from Kolkata to Mumbai? What dreams did you both bring?
Kaushik- Whatever colors we get at every turn in life, we have adopted them. There were definitely struggles, but they were all a lot of fun. Earlier there was less work and now there is so much work that we have to leave. There were definitely some shortcomings in every stage, but we have learned from everyone.
Guddu- It has been a very beautiful journey. We feel good when people like our songs.

How did this pairing of Kaushik and Guddu form?
Guddu- Kaushik is my cousin. When both of us were in college, Guddu used to tell me let’s make a few songs in Bollywood. At that time I was associated with a band in Kolkata, while Kaushik was associated with Indian classical music. We then started doing collabs one by one. I learned everything from Kaushik about how to do composition during that time. From there we came together.
Kaushik- When I was associated with Indian classical music, at that time we did not encourage singing Bollywood songs. But still I used to practice secretly.
Where did both of you get the inspiration to enter this field?
Kaushik- I got inspiration from my father. He used to sing and also teach me. I used to listen to the songs of Tagore and Kishore Kumar. Actually, we had no plan to enter this field. But when I started, I felt that I will no longer be limited to this.
We came to Mumbai in 2013 and reached Pritam da’s place as soon as we arrived. Pritam da asked us what we wanted to do in life and I said that I want to become a composer. We joined their team and learned everything from there.
Guddu- I was surprised to see how many people are involved in making a song. 20-20 people are engaged.
Tell us about how you got your first break in the Bollywood industry.
Kaushik- The first break was Rajkumar Rao’s film ‘Behen Hogi Teri Bolkar’, in which we composed the music for the song ‘Tere Hoke Rahoon’. There was a song composed by us in the film Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana. Then composed the song Badhaai Ho, Love Yatri, Mere Yaara in Suryavanshi. Then we also sang the chorus part of Deewani Ki Deewaniyat and composed the music.

Like your pair, is there any Bollywood couple who inspires you in the music industry?
Guddu- Yes, Vishal-Shekhar and our guru Pritam da inspire us a lot. We have taken our education from their school. A.R. Got to learn a lot from Rahman ji also.
Did you feel bad about not getting a break in a big film like Saiyara?
Kaushik- Look, I admire Mohit Suri sir a lot. Even if some work is not done, we go and sit near them and talk. We could not fulfill the expectations they had from us.
I told him that I liked your film very much sir, but sorry that we could not give you the song. He replied that what you narrated was very good, but it was not fitting in my film.
