According to the Federation of Indian Associations, the parade saw participation of more than 50 marching groups and more than 30 marching bands, as well as celebrities. Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha was the grand marshal. Actor Pankaj Tripathi and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari attended the parade as special guests.
India Day Parade is held every year in New York to celebrate India’s independence. This tradition has been going on for more than four decades. This year the 42nd India Day Parade was celebrated. The parade marched from East 38th Street to East 27th Street on Madison Avenue in New York.
Speaking to news agency ANI, spiritual guru Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj said, “I have come to New York to participate in the India Day parade on the invitation of the Indian-American community. The tableau of Ram temple has garnered attention. The tableau of Ram temple shows that the culture of India considers the whole world as one family.”
Controversy over showing Ram temple in tableau
There has been a lot of controversy over the Ram Mandir tableau in the India Day parade. A group representing Indian-American Muslims withdrew its tableau from the parade over the inclusion of the Ram Mandir tableau.
Some American organizations wrote a letter to New York Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, calling the tableau anti-Muslim. They have said that the Ram Mandir glorifies the demolition of a mosque.
The groups that signed the letter to the mayor and governor also include the Council on American Islamic Relations, the Indian American Muslim Council, and Hindus for Human Rights.
