The case of religious conversion and sexual harassment related to TCS office in Nashik, Maharashtra reached the Supreme Court on Thursday. A petition has been filed in the court demanding instructions to the Central and State Governments to take strict action.
A suo motu case related to religious conversion is already pending in the Supreme Court. A new application has been filed in the same case regarding TCS case of Nashik.
The petition has been filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay. It was said in the petition that this is not just a matter of conversion, but a planned game against the country. He said that fraudulent conversion is a threat to the sovereignty, secularism and independence of the country. Conversion done forcibly or fraudulently through any organization should be kept in the category of terrorist act.
Three major allegations were made in the petition…
- Changing religion through force or fraud is a serious threat to the country. When this work is done as part of a big organized and pressure-driven campaign, then it should be considered a terrorist act.
- This forced or fraudulent conversion is not an isolated religious incident, but a well-planned conspiracy. Foreign powers often finance this conspiracy. Its objective is to change the religious population balance of the country which poses a threat to the unity, integrity and security of India.
- The right to freedom of religion does not allow anyone to convert through deception, pressure, greed or coercion. Citing Article 25 of the Constitution, it has been said that this right is subject to conditions like public order, morality and health.
Two demands were made from the court…
- The Central Government and all the State Governments should be instructed to take strict steps so that religious conversion through fraud or force can be stopped.
- Central and state governments should be instructed to create separate special courts to hear cases of religious conversion.
Describing this issue as serious, the court asked Attorney General R. Had sought help from Venkataramani. The court had then said that the issue of religious conversion is serious and it should not be given a political colour. This petition has been filed under the same pending case, in which strict steps have been demanded to stop fraudulent religious conversion across the country.
