Stoltenberg said that NATO could have done more to prevent Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian Prime Minister, said, “If NATO had not hesitated in giving arms to Ukraine from the beginning, then perhaps the war would not have broken out. We were not able to decide on giving sniper rifles to Ukraine.”

Stoltenberg said that when Russia attacked Ukraine on 24 February 2022, it was the worst day of his tenure as NATO head. The Ukraine war can only be stopped through dialogue and agreement. For this, it is necessary to talk to Russia, but during this time the interests of Ukraine cannot be ignored.
Stoltenberg, who became NATO Secretary General in 2014, will complete his term in October this year. Former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will replace him as NATO head. The Secretary General in NATO is an international civil servant.
He is the chairman of all the important committees of NATO. He also has a role in the important decisions of the organization. Apart from this, he also has the responsibility of the spokesperson of the organization and the head of the international staff.
Ukraine wants to join NATO
Ukrainian President Zelensky repeatedly demands to join NATO. He has said many times that Ukraine is ready to become a member of NATO. He is talking to member countries on this. He also said that when security is not guaranteed, then there is only a guarantee of war.
In fact, Germany, France and America are not ready to include Ukraine in NATO during the war. These countries are worried that doing so will further increase Russia’s anger. According to NATO’s Article 5, an attack on any of its member countries will be considered an attack on all NATO countries.
NATO became the reason for the Russia-Ukraine dispute
- After the collapse of the Soviet Union into 15 parts in 1991, NATO expanded rapidly, especially within Europe and the countries that were part of the Soviet Union.
- In 2004, three countries that were part of the Soviet Union joined NATO – Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania; all three are border countries of Russia.

- Ukraine has a border of more than 2200 km with Russia. Russia believes that if Ukraine joins NATO, NATO forces will reach the Russian border under the pretext of Ukraine.
- If Ukraine joins NATO, the distance of Russia’s capital Moscow from the western countries will be only 640 kilometers. Currently this distance is about 1600 kilometers. Russia wants Ukraine to guarantee that it will never join NATO.
