Delhi government has now declared human rabies as a notifiable disease. That is, as soon as any suspected or confirmed case of rabies comes to light, it will be mandatory to inform the health department.
Delhi’s Rekha Gupta government says that with this decision, rabies cases can be monitored timely. There will be no delay in the treatment of the patient. Now all government-private hospitals, medical colleges and private doctors of Delhi will have to report such cases immediately.
Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said that even a single death due to rabies is not acceptable. This decision will help in timely treatment and monitoring. This order has come into effect immediately. Rabies is a fatal disease, but it can be completely prevented with timely treatment.
The Delhi government is also preparing a State Action Plan for Rabies Elimination to prevent rabies deaths due to dog bites.
Some official statistics related to rabies
- According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), a total of 49 rabies cases have been registered in the year 2025. 35,198 cases of dog bites were recorded.
- The central government had told in Parliament that there were no deaths due to rabies in Delhi between 2022 and 2024, but in response to RTI it came to light that about 18 people have died due to rabies in Delhi during this period.
- According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year about 59,000 people die due to rabies in the world. In India, 20,000 people die every year due to this.
- 60% of rabies cases and deaths reported in India are in children under 15 years of age as cases of child bites often go unreported.
