Born in an ordinary Sikh family in Dosanjh Kalan village of Phillaur tehsil of Punjab, the story of Diljit Dosanjh becoming a global star is not so easy. His childhood was spent amidst financial difficulties. That’s why he could study only till tenth standard. Diljit was fond of singing since childhood and he used to perform Gurbani Kirtan in Gurudwara.
In his early career, he also gave performances in stage shows and weddings. Diljit started his career from Punjabi music industry. Although he did not get success in the beginning. When Diljit stepped into Bollywood after being successful in the Punjabi music industry and films, people started taunting that people with turbans would not be able to get the role of hero in Bollywood.
Along with success, Diljit has also been in controversies from time to time. When he was accused of promoting the wrong image of Punjabi youth, he came into controversy by supporting the farmers during the farmers’ movement. When he worked with a Pakistani actress, he was accused of treason.
Questions were also being raised on his upcoming film ‘Border 2’ whether an artist like Diljit should be a part of an iconic film related to patriotism or not.

Changed my surname to increase the value of village soil
Diljit was interested in music since childhood. He used to sing Shabad-Kirtan in Gurudwaras, which gave a strong base to his singing. His father Balveer Singh was a bus driver and mother Sukhwinder Kaur a housewife. Diljit’s real name is Daljit Singh which he later changed to Diljit Dosanjh. He did this on the suggestion of his friend Rajinder Singh.
Rajinder Singh recognized Diljit’s singing early and encouraged him to move forward. Diljit Dosanjh changed his name from Daljit Singh to Diljit. He also changed his surname to Diljit Dosanjh after his birthplace Dosanjh Kalan. He did this to increase the value of the soil of his village.
first break in punjabi music album
While singing in small programs and Gurudwaras in Punjab, Diljit once met music producer Balveer Boparai. He gave Diljit a break in the year 2004 in the Punjabi music album ‘Ishq Da Uda Adda’. This music album was released by T-Series. However, Diljit did not get much success from this album. After this, songs like ‘Smile’, ‘Patiala Peg’ made him a popular singer of Punjab.

After the flop of his first film, Diljit Dosanjh started feeling that acting was not his cup of tea.
Started acting from Punjabi cinema
Diljit Dosanjh made his acting debut in the year 2011 with the Punjabi film ‘The Lion of Punjab’. Impressed by Diljit’s singing, director Guddu Dhanoa chose him for the lead role in the film. This film was an action drama, in which Diljit played the role of a young patriot. Although the film was not successful at the box office, Diljit Dosanjh was a bit disappointed with the failure of his first film. However, the song ‘Lakh 28 Kudi Da’ of the film was liked a lot.
Then I decided to quit acting
During an interview with BBC, Diljit Dosanjh had told that after doing two films, he had decided not to act. Diljit had told- Even before the release of my first film, the second film was shot. Then I thought that I will not do films anymore, songs are fine, but the second film became a hit. Then I felt that now acting is also okay.
Stardom started with ‘Jatt and Juliet’
After ‘The Lion of Punjab’ and ‘Jeene Mera Dil Luteya’, Diljit’s ‘Jatt and Juliet’ was released in 2012. This film changed Diljit’s fortunes and he became one of the big stars of Punjabi cinema. After this he worked in many hit Punjabi films like ‘Jatt and Juliet 2’, ‘Punjab 1984’, ‘Sardar Ji’, ‘Ambarsariya’.

Diljit Dosanjh’s entry in Bollywood
Diljit Dosanjh entered Bollywood in 2016 with the film ‘Udta Punjab’. He played the role of police officer Sartaj Singh in it, which was highly appreciated by the audience and critics. Diljit received the Best Male Debut Filmfare Award for this film. However, this film remained in a lot of controversies before its release.
Before its release, the film was embroiled in a major controversy with the censor board. The drug problem and social reality of Punjab was shown in this film. The censor board suggested cutting several scenes from the film. The matter reached the court and the film was released without major cuts. Although the controversy was regarding the content of the film, Diljit along with the entire star cast also came into limelight due to this controversy.
Can’t stop wearing turban for movies
After ‘Udta Punjab’, Diljit Dosanjh created a unique place for himself in Bollywood by acting powerfully in many films like Phillauri, Soorma, Good News, Crew. However, there was a taunt in Bollywood about Diljit that Pug people would not be able to get the role of hero in Bollywood.
In an interview given to IANS, Diljit Kaha had said – Many people have told me that I should not be an actor because I wear a turban and if I want to work in films, I will have to leave my turban. After that I thought I will leave films, but cannot leave my turban.

Not only the star of Bollywood and Punjabi film industry but Diljit Dosanjh has now become a global star. Diljit is the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella Music Festival 2023. This was a historic achievement for any Indian Punjabi artist. He gave international recognition to Punjabi music by doing world tours in America, Canada, UK and Australia.
Diljit Dosanjh proudly presented the Punjabi language on international platforms in turban, kurta-pajama. This is the reason why today he is considered the global ambassador of Punjabi culture. Although some people raised questions about his turban and desi attire, a large number of people called it a victory for Punjabi identity.
Has also been in controversies from time to time
Diljit Dosanjh, who has become a global star from Punjabi music and cinema, has had a successful career, but he has also been in controversies from time to time. Although Diljit’s image has generally been that of a low-profile and settled artiste, some issues have brought him into the limelight.
In the initial phase of his career, there were controversies regarding the lyrics of Punjabi songs. He was accused of promoting liquor, weapons and wrong image of Punjabi youth. Punjab government and social organizations many times warned Punjabi artists regarding the content of the songs. Diljit later said in the interview that he wants to move towards clean and responsible content. This is the reason that later on the language of his songs remained relatively balanced.
Heated altercation with Kangana Ranaut
During the farmers’ movement of 2020–21, Diljit Dosanjh openly came in support of the farmers. Diljit had described himself as not a politician but an artist standing in favor of farmers. During this period he received huge support as well as criticism. During this time, there was a heated argument with Kangana Ranaut on Twitter.

Surrounded by controversies for working with Pakistani actress
Diljit Dosanjh was surrounded by controversies after working with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in ‘Sardaar Zee 3’. In fact, after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, all Pakistani artists have been completely banned in India. FWICE (Film Federation of Western Cine Employees) had announced at that time that if anyone worked with Indian or Pakistani artistes, it would be considered treason.
On this controversy, ‘Sardar G-3’ producer Gunbir Singh Sandhu had said in his clarification that this film was shot before the conflict with Pakistan. However, keeping in mind the sentiments of Indians, this film was not released in India. In this case, Diljit had described art as above boundaries.

Diljit Dosanjh is playing the role of Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon in the film Border 2. This Param Vir Chakra winning Air Force officer was martyred in the India-Pakistan war of 1971.
There was a demand to remove it from ‘Border 2’
Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Border 2’ is releasing in theaters on 23 January 2026. It is the sequel to the original 1997 film Border, starring Sunny Deol in the lead role, along with Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty. Diljit had come into controversies regarding this film also.
Questions were being raised whether an artist like Diljit should be a part of an iconic patriotic film or not. In this matter, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees had taken a strict stand and appealed to the makers of the film to remove Diljit from ‘Border 2’, but by then the shooting of Diljit Dosanjh’s part was almost completed.

Dil Luminati Tour remained in controversies along with success
Diljit Dosanjh’s Dil Luminati Tour in 2024 was very successful, but along with the success came many controversies during that music tour. Black marketing of concert tickets also came to light. Apart from this, Diljit got a government notice before the Hyderabad concert that he was not to sing songs containing alcohol and drugs.
The singer complied with this notice, but later also said that if all the states were made dry states, he would never sing a song on alcohol in his life.
