India is fully prepared to take its military power to a new height. Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan made a big announcement on Monday and said that the country’s first ‘Tri-Service Joint Operations Centre’ (Joint Operations Centre – JOC) will start functioning by the end of May 2026.

This center has been built deep underground, far below the new duty building being built in New Delhi. The inspiration for making it came from the recent Iran war, where underground centers played a big role in security. This center will not only be equipped with modern technologies, but will also act as a strong link between the three armies of India in case of war.

One ‘mind’ and unified command of the three armies

The biggest advantage of this new operation center will be that now the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force will work together instead of making separate plans. The main objective of this Delhi-based center is to make accurate planning in the battlefield and implement it immediately.

Till now the three armies had their own separate command centres, but now sitting under one roof, officers of the three armies will keep an eye on every move of the enemy. This step is being considered a huge milestone in the direction of India’s military modernization, which will eliminate the delay in decisions during war.

Lesson learned from Iran war: Security shield under the ground

Security experts say that the decision to build this center deep underground is strategic. In Iran and other modern wars, it has been seen that the enemies first launch air strikes on communication centers and command centres.

Being underground, this center will be completely safe from major missile attacks and bombings. Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh had proposed this centre, which is now being implemented on a war footing. This center is not only safe, but from here the borders of the entire country can be monitored 24 hours.

India’s move towards theater command

This Joint Operations Center is actually the first major preparation towards implementing theater command in India. Theater command means dividing the borders of the entire country into different parts and placing all three armies under a single commander.

CDS General Anil Chauhan said that work on this integration has been going on seriously for the last two and a half years. According to the plan, three main theater commands will be created in India – first, Northern Command to keep an eye on the China border, second, Western Command for Pakistan and third, Maritime Command to protect the sea.

China’s challenge and India’s future preparation

To a large extent, this reform of India is being done keeping in view the global challenges. Our neighboring country China had converted its army into a theater command in 2015 itself, due to which its decision-making power had increased significantly. This is considered to be the biggest change in military reform in India since independence.

The opening of this new center will not only increase the strength of the army, but weapons, logistics and infrastructure will also be used more intelligently and at less expense. As soon as this center starts functioning by the end of May, India will join the few countries which have such a modern and integrated system for war.
