An earthquake of magnitude 7 has occurred in Tibet. Earthquake tremors were felt at 8:03 pm Indian time on Thursday night. Its center was at a depth of 10 kilometers from the ground in the Nagku region of Tibet, about 400 kilometers from the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

According to China Earthquake Network Center (CENC), earthquake tremors were clearly felt in the local area. At present, information about loss of life and property has not been revealed.

Earthquakes have caused devastation in Tibet before

Tibet is one of those areas of the world where the risk of earthquake is high. Here the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide with each other. Due to their movements, the Himalayan Mountains have been formed, but due to this, earthquakes also keep occurring in the area.

In January 2025, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Tingri County, Tibet. In this, about 400 people died in Tibet, while 13 people lost their lives in neighboring Nepal. Its tremors were felt in many parts of South Asia including North India.

Earlier in 2010, an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude had occurred in Yushu in the neighboring Chinese province of Qinghai. At least 2,698 people died and about 300 people went missing.

Flood also caused devastation in August

In Tibet, on August 26 this year, a large chunk of snow and rocks broke off from the mountain near the Nepal border and fell into the river.

Due to this the river route was closed for some time. Later, the strong flow of water moved towards Nepal, causing damage to many villages, roads and bridges.

According to China’s official figures, 43 people died in this disaster in Gyirong area of Tibet, while 519 people went missing. At the same time, 1,455 people died and 5,285 people were reported missing due to floods in Nepal.

Why do earthquakes occur frequently in Tibet?

  • There are two big plates under the ground. Indian plate and Eurasia plate.
  • The Indian plate is slowly moving north and pushing the Eurasia plate.
  • Due to pressure, there is movement in the rocks under the ground.
  • When rocks suddenly slide, the ground starts shaking. This is called earthquake.
  • In Tibet, pressure keeps accumulating in the cracks present under the ground. That is why earthquakes occur here again and again.
