Director and actor Tigmanshu Dhulia has raised questions on the way storytelling is done in current Hindi cinema. He said that due to corporate culture and uniform film templates, original stories are decreasing in films. Dhulia made this comment during the Rajendra Mathur Memorial Lecture organized by the Editors Guild of India (EGI) recently. The program was organized in Delhi. Giving examples of commercial mainstream cinema, Dhulia mentioned ‘Pushpa’, ‘KGF’ and ‘Dhurandhar’. “Every film is a fictional biopic,” he said. Giving the example of ‘Dhurandhar’, he said that if someone is asked the story of the film, he might not be able to tell it properly. He said, “I have seen that film. I liked the first part of the film very much. It is very well presented, very engaging and the music is also good, but if you ask the story, you will not be able to tell the story.” Explaining the story of the film in his own style, Dhulia said, “There is a man, an undercover spy, who goes to Pakistan and creates havoc there. Is this a story?” He further said that the number of people telling stories in films has reduced and those who want to tell a different kind of story do not get a chance to make it. According to him, the makers fear that such films will not work. Dhulia said – Same template is visible in films. Dhulia said that same template is visible everywhere. Linking it to extreme capitalism, he said that just as uniformity is increasing in cities, fashion, vehicles and shops, in the same way individuality is decreasing in films too. Referring to the old Hindi cinema, he said that the situation in Hindi cinema was fine till 2017 due to filmmakers like Vimal Roy, Shakti Samant, Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Subhash Ghai. After this there was a sudden change and we forgot to tell the story. Talking about Tigmanshu Dhulia’s work front, his upcoming film ‘Ghamsaan’ is going to be released on ZEE5 on 11 September 2026. The film stars Pratik Gandhi and Arshad Warsi in lead roles. The film is based on a story inspired by the dacoit world of Bundelkhand. Hrithik had expressed disagreement with the politics of ‘Dhurandhar’. Let us tell you that last year, actor Hrithik Roshan had come under the target of trolls for posting a post related to the film ‘Dhurandhar’. After the release of the film, Hrithik made a post praising it, but also said that he does not agree with the politics shown in the film. He was pulled up for his statement, after which the actor again shared another post praising Dhurandhar. Hrithik had earlier written about the film on his official Instagram account, I love cinema very much. I like people who get completely immersed in the story, the story moves them, moves them, and then puts out on the screen everything that has to be said. Dhurandhar is one such film. I liked its story very much. This is cinema. He further wrote, I may not agree with its politics and there can also be a discussion on what are the responsibilities of a filmmaker as a citizen. Still, I learned a lot from watching it, as I always have as a student of cinema. At the same time, the next day, Hrithik Roshan had written in praise of Dhurandhar from the official Aditya Dhar, you are an amazing filmmaker. Ranveer Singh, from a very calm character to a very intense one, what a journey it has been. And your consistently excellent performance in this is fantastic. Akshaye Khanna has always been my favourite, and this film proves why. R Madhavan, what tremendous decency, strength and dignity you have shown. And Rakesh Bedi, what you did was beyond amazing. What an acting, fantastic. Big applause to the makeup and prosthetics team too. Now can’t wait for part 2. Ramya criticized ‘Dhurandhar 2’. Let us tell you that Kannada actress Ramya had criticized the second part of the film ‘Dhurandhar’. After watching the film, Ramya shared a long post on social media platform X (Twitter). He has advised the audience not to waste their time and money by going to theatres, but wait for it to come on OTT. Ramya also wrote that people are saying that Ranveer has carried the film on his shoulders, but I could only see his hair. Ramya also criticized the violence shown in the film. He described the film as a visual handbook of weapons, in which even simple objects like syringes and spanners have been used as weapons. Questioning the logic of the film, he had said, “Even after having both legs amputated and kerosene poured on the body, the character is still speaking dialogues as if he is in a ‘Ted Talk’. For this, he should get Nobel Prize, not Oscar. Jai to medical science.”
