Congress is going to become a part of the government in Tamil Nadu after 59 years. Congress MLAs S Rajesh Kumar and P Vishwanathan will join Vijay’s cabinet today.

Rajesh Kumar Kiliyur and Vishwanathan are MLAs from Melur seat. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Thursday at 10 am. However, official information about how many ministers will take oath has not been given.

Congress Committee General Secretary KC Venugopal said that this is a historic opportunity for the Congress. The party is joining the Tamil Nadu government after nearly six decades.

In fact, from 1952 to 1967, there was a Congress government in Tamil Nadu (then Madras State). C. Rajagopalachari, K. Kamaraj and M. Bhaktavatsalam were the Chief Ministers during this period. After the DMK came to power in 1967, the Congress formed alliances with both the DMK and the AIADMK, but did not become part of the government.

VCK and IUML may also get a place in the cabinet

According to party sources, representatives of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) may also be included in the cabinet. At the same time, rebel leaders of AIADMK are unlikely to get a place in the cabinet.

Senior TVK leader and minister Aadhav Arjuna appealed to Congress, VCK and IUML to join the government. He told it of CM Vijay.

Got a share in power after separating from DMK

Congress had been demanding a share in power in Tamil Nadu for a long time. Some party leaders had also advocated a coalition government before the assembly elections.

Congress earlier had an alliance with DMK. However, DMK chief M.K. Stalin had clearly said before the elections that the power sharing formula would not work in Tamil Nadu.

After the assembly election results were declared, on May 4, Congress decided to leave the DMK alliance and support the Vijay-led government. Congress currently has 5 MLAs.
