US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he is going to impose heavy tariffs on India in 24 hours. He said that India is working to fuel the Russian war machine against Ukraine by trade with Russia. Because of this, America needs to take strict steps.

A day before this, he had said that India is buying cheap oil from Russia and selling it in the open market. India does not care about how many people are being killed in Ukraine due to Russia’s attack. For this reason, I will increase the tariffs on India hugely.

Before the Ukraine War, India used to import only 0.2% (68 thousand barrels per day) from Russia. By May 2023 it increased to 45% (2 million barrels per day), while India is buying 17.8 lakh barrels of oil from Russia every day from January to July in 2025.

For the last two years, India has been buying more than $ 130 billion (Rs 11.33 lakh crore) every year.

India is the second largest buyer of Russian oil

According to media reports, India’s purchasing Russian oil has been beneficial for both countries. Prior to the Ukraine War, Russia used to sell its crude oil at a price of $ 60 per barrel by the European Union, but India buys it at a discount since the war.

After this, Indian refinery companies process it and sell it by Europe and other countries and they benefit from crores. With this, India also gets cheap oil for its domestic needs. According to media reports, India is the largest buyer of Russian oil after China.

India’s answer- America itself is doing business with Russia

Giving a strong reply to Trump’s threat, India on Monday said that the countries that criticize us are doing a lot of business with Russia, that too without any compulsion.

The Government of India said that the US and European Union (EU) are criticizing India for buying oil from Russia, which is not right. We will take every necessary steps to maintain our national interests and economic security.

After the Ukraine War began, India had to buy oil from Russia, as its old oil suppliers started supplying to Europe. At that time, America had encouraged India to do so.

India said that in 2024, EU traded about 85 billion euros with Russia. Similarly, the US is importing uranium hexaphloride from Russia for its nuclear industry, paladium, fertilizer and chemical for electric vehicle industry.

India advised not to stop purchasing Russian oil

The Research Institute Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) told India last month that it should not come under American pressure to stop the purchase of crude oil from Russia and oppose it.

The think tank has said that importing oil from Russia has helped India control inflation and maintain economic stability in unstable global environment.

American oil import doubles after tariff announcement

After Trump’s tariff threats in April, India has also doubled the purchase of crude oil from the US. It increased by 114% on an annual basis in the April-June quarter.

At the same time, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has reduced the prices of 37 essential medicines by 10-15%. These include drugs such as paracetamol, atorvastatin and amoxicillin, which are essential for patients with heart, diabetes and infections.
