On Saturday, he praised British soldiers and remembered their sacrifices in the Afghanistan war. Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that Britain’s great and extremely brave soldiers will always be with America. He said that 457 British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan, many were seriously injured and that they were among the world’s greatest warriors. Trump’s statement comes after the controversy when he said in an interview this week that NATO countries played a limited role in Afghanistan and they stayed away from the frontline. His comment had spread anger among NATO allies. Britain had called Trump’s statement insulting. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump’s statement “insulting and extremely objectionable”. Prince Harry, who took part in the Afghanistan war, also said that the sacrifices of NATO soldiers should be remembered with respect and truth. Starmer spoke to Trump by phone on Saturday. According to Downing Street, the talks discussed the bravery and sacrifice of British and American soldiers fighting together in Afghanistan. British PM said- America took help from NATO countries after the terrorist attack. On September 11, 2001, the biggest terrorist attack in the history of America took place. Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes. Two of these planes hit the twin buildings of the World Trade Center in New York, one plane fell into the Pentagon and the fourth plane fell in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people died in these attacks. After this, America called it not just a terrorist attack but a direct war on its country. After this, America asked for formal help from NATO. NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history. Under this article it is believed that an attack on any one member country of the organization will be considered an attack on all the member countries. As soon as Article 5 came into force, many NATO members and partner countries including Britain, Italy, Denmark reached Afghanistan in support of America. America said that Al-Qaeda has the protection of Taliban in Afghanistan. After this, the armies of NATO countries stayed in Afghanistan with the American army for about 20 years. During this period thousands of foreign soldiers were deployed and hundreds of soldiers lost their lives. NATO had conducted two operations in Afghanistan. Mainly two major operations were carried out under NATO in Afghanistan, in which thousands of soldiers from dozens of countries including Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Poland, Denmark took part. The first and largest operation was the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which ran from 2001 to 2014. It was launched on the orders of the United Nations Security Council and has been led by NATO since 2003. ISAF’s purpose was to train Afghan security forces, provide security, and assist in the fight against the Taliban/al-Qaeda. More than 1,30,000 troops were deployed in this mission, which included 51 NATO and partner countries. The second campaign was the Resolute Support Mission, which ran from 2015 to 2021. It was a non-combat mission, providing training, advice and assistance to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF). In this too, about 9,000-17,000 soldiers from 36 NATO countries were involved. In these operations, 457 soldiers of Britain, 159 of Canada, 90 of France, 62 of Germany, 44 of Poland and 44 of Denmark were martyred. European countries said – We fought together, this cannot be forgotten. Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel called Trump’s statement false. Former Polish special forces commander and retired general Roman Polkow said Trump has crossed the limit. He said, “We shed blood, gave our lives for this alliance. We fought together but not everyone returned home.” Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kośniak-Kamysh said that Poland’s sacrifice can never be forgotten and cannot be diminished. Britain’s former MI6 chief Richard Moore said he and his colleagues served on dangerous missions alongside brave CIA officers and considered America their closest ally. On Trump’s statement, Britain’s Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey wrote on Twitter that Trump had taken exemption five times to avoid draft in the Vietnam War, then how can he question the sacrifice of others.
