US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an order to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’. According to the order, this process will be completed in 30 days and after this the new name will be used in the government maps and records of America. Trump compared the decision to changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to ‘America’s Gulf’. He joked that now that America has a gulf and a lake, it might even have to think about renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. At the same time, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted to the decision to change the name of Lake Ontario. He said- We know America is changing the name, but Canadians also know that in reality its name is Lake Ontario. Before, now and always. Canada will call this lake as Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes located between the United States and Canada. On one side of it is New York and on the other side is the Ontario province of Canada. The border of both the countries also passes through this lake. Trump had said twice before – He is considering changing the name. Trump had talked about changing the name of Lake Ontario for the first time on August 25. He had said that America is not expected to have much trade with Canada, so changing the name of the lake is being seriously considered. Two days later, he signed the order to make the decision official. Trump said in his order that Lake Ontario is an important part of America’s economy and heritage. It is important for trade, shipping, defence, agriculture and energy. He told that America has spent about 4 billion dollars i.e. 38 thousand crore rupees in the last 10 years on the conservation of Great Lakes. The decision to change the name comes amid growing trade tensions between the US and Canada. Recently, America has decided to impose 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth about $20 billion i.e. about Rs 1.7 lakh crore. In response, Canada also announced to impose the same tariff on American goods. Trump said that Canada is the most difficult country to deal with in terms of trade. He alleged that Canada does not treat America properly and he cannot accept this under any circumstances. The name of the province of Ontario is named after Lake Ontario. The name of Lake Ontario has been in use even before the Europeans reached America. The name comes from a word in the Huron language, which is said to mean ‘lake of shining water’. Later, the Canadian province of Ontario was also named after this lake. However, there is an important thing about changing the name. There is no single global organization that decides the names of the world’s international lakes and wetlands. The US may call it ‘Lake America’ in its government documents and maps, but Canada may continue to use the old name ‘Lake Ontario’. Can America alone change the name? The US government can decide to use a new name for a place in its official documents, government maps and records. But this does not mean that other countries will also be forced to accept that name. Lake Ontario is connected to both the US and Canada. So even if the US government starts calling it ‘Lake America’ in its documents, Canada can continue the name ‘Lake Ontario’ in its government records. Other countries and international organizations will also not be forced to automatically adopt the American name. That means changing the name will not change the ownership of the lake. Using the name ‘Lake America’ would not make the Canadian part of the lake a US territory. Trump has changed the name of ‘Gulf of Mexico’. Changing the name of any place is not new for Trump. In January 2025, he ordered the transfer of the Gulf of Mexico to the US government. After this, American agencies started using the new name in their records and maps, but Mexico did not accept it. Then Mexico, citing international maritime law, had said that America cannot change the name of the entire Gulf on the basis of its jurisdiction alone. However, the legal status of Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico is different. The Gulf is a maritime area, while Lake Ontario is a lake shared between the US and Canada. 5 big reasons for dispute between America and Canada 1. New fight on tariffs The biggest dispute is regarding tariffs. The US has imposed additional duties of up to 50% on Canadian goods worth about $20 billion. This includes liquor, dairy, furniture, hockey equipment and many other items. After talks broke down, Canada has also decided to impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs. 2. Calling Canada the 51st state Trump has many times talked about making Canada the 51st state of America. Trump says that America benefits Canada by billions of dollars in terms of trade. If Canada becomes a part of the US, these trade disparities and tariff disputes will automatically end. 3. Calling Trudeau the Governor of Canada. Trump had many times addressed the then Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau as ‘Governor’ in a sarcastic tone. Canadian leaders and the public considered this an affront to their sovereignty. 4. Border Security, Illegal Infiltration and Fentanyl Smuggling The growing border security concerns between the US and Canada have also become a cause of major controversy. The Trump administration has alleged that illegal immigration from Canada’s northern border and smuggling of dangerous drugs (particularly fentanyl) into the US are increasing. The US has demanded Canada to strictly monitor its borders and enforce strict immigration policies. 5. Dairy and agriculture dispute The US has long opposed Canada’s ‘supply management’ system, which protects the Canadian dairy and poultry markets from foreign competition. The US wants Canada to fully open its dairy market to American farmers. ————————- Also read this news… Canadian PM said – Situation of war between America and us: Called Trump’s tariff an attack; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced to impose retaliatory tariffs on the US.
