Trump’s senior adviser Stephen Miller said in an interview with CNN that the US government wants Greenland to be part of the US and that no country will compete with the US militarily over the future of Greenland.

At the same time, according to Reuters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the administration does not intend to attack Greenland, but to buy it from Denmark. A senior US official said options included direct purchases or a special agreement with Greenland and that the US wanted to build a beneficial relationship with the Greenlandic people.

Only 57 thousand people live in Greenland, which has been largely self-governing since 1979, but defense and foreign policy are in the hands of Denmark.

Only 200 Danish soldiers deployed in Greenland

Greenland has no army of its own. Denmark is responsible for its defense and foreign policy. It is an autonomous region of Denmark.

After 2009, the Greenland government has gained leeway in coastal security and some foreign affairs, but the main matters of defense and foreign policy still lie with Denmark.

European countries have expressed strong objection to the White House statement. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Denmark issued a joint statement saying that Greenland belongs to its people and only Denmark and Greenland can decide its future.

He called for strengthening Arctic security together with all NATO members, but stressed respecting the principles of the UN Charter such as sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At the same time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said that if America tries to occupy Greenland, the NATO military alliance will come to an end.

In a TV interview on Monday night, Frederickson said that if the US takes military action against any NATO member country, the entire NATO system will collapse. Nothing will be left. An attack on one member in NATO is considered an attack on all.

Frederiksen appealed to Trump to stop making threats against the close ally and reminded that the people of Greenland themselves have clearly said that they are not for sale.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen also welcomed the European leaders’ statement and said negotiations should be conducted in a respectful manner.
