Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that his government is not working on any free trade agreement with China. He said that there is no intention to enter into any such trade agreement.
Carney’s statement came a day after US President Trump’s stern warning. Trump had said that if Canada signs a free trade agreement with China, 100% tariffs will be imposed on Canadian goods.
Carney said, “We will provide notice before we enter into a free trade agreement with any non-market economy country under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). We have no intention of doing such a trade with China or any other such country.”

Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Canada
Trump warned Canada in a series of posts on social media on Saturday that it would face serious consequences if it deepened trade ties with China. Trump said that if Carney thinks that he will make Canada a way for China from where China can send its goods to America, then he is wrong.
Trump said that China will cause complete harm to Canada. China will destroy Canada’s businesses, society and lifestyle and swallow the country whole. The US President clearly said that if Canada made any agreement with China, the US would immediately impose 100% tariffs on all goods coming from Canada.
Trump had also said on Friday that China would eat up Canada within a year. Actually, Canadian PM Mark Carney is opposing Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ missile project. Trump has become angry with this.
He said that Canada is developing friendship with China instead of us, which will ruin them in the very first year. Accusing Canada, Trump said that it is a threat to the security of North America.
Trump was angry with Canada-China trade agreement
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited China from January 13 to January 17 and signed trade deals there. According to reports, Trump is said to be angry with this.
About a year ago, Carney himself had described China as the “biggest security threat” facing Canada, but a year later the situation has changed. He has signed many important agreements during his visit to China. In this, Canada will reduce the tariff imposed on China’s electric vehicles (EV).
Canada, along with the US, had imposed 100% tariff on Chinese vehicles in 2024. Now under the new agreement this tariff is being reduced to 6.1%. However, this will be applicable to 49 thousand electric vehicles every year. It can be increased to Rs 70 thousand in 5 years.
In return, China will reduce retaliatory tariffs imposed on some important Canadian agricultural products. Earlier this tariff was up to 84%, which has now been reduced to 15%. It can be reduced to zero by the end of the year.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was on a visit to China from January 13 to 17, where several agreements were signed between him and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Free Trade Agreement between Canada and America
America and Canada are each other’s largest trading partners, where goods and services worth about Rs 15 thousand crores are exchanged every day.
In 2024, the total value of bilateral trade was about Rs 79 lakh crore, of which the US had a goods trade deficit with Canada of Rs 5.21 lakh crore.
USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) was an important agreement between the two countries. It came into effect in 2020. This agreement promotes free trade. It is to be reviewed in 2026. Goods (81% of imports) are exempt under USMCA.
A large part of the crude oil, gas and electricity that America receives comes from Canada. Apart from this, auto parts, lumber and agricultural products also go to the US on a large scale from Canada.
Canada sends a large portion of its total exports to the United States. Canada is largely dependent on the US for machinery, technology, medicines and consumer goods.

Canadian PM opposed Trump’s Golden Dome project
Trump wants to capture Greenland and build a Golden Dome there. Carney had opposed Trump’s talk of occupation, which angered the US President.
America has decided to build its defense system Golden Dome on the lines of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. Trump had announced the Golden Dome project just a week after the beginning of his second term. This project is worth about 175 billion dollars (about Rs 14-15 lakh crore).
According to media reports, a plan has been made to launch more than 1200 satellites for the Golden Dome missile defense system. With its help, America is preparing to detect and destroy enemy missiles in space.
Of these, 400 to 1000 satellites will be deployed for identification and tracking of enemy missiles. At the same time, about 200 interceptor satellites will be prepared to shoot down those missiles in space.
This defense system will be capable of stopping missiles launched from any part of the world. Trump has claimed that the Golden Dome will be capable of stopping attacks from space.
This will include both surveillance satellites and interceptor satellites. Trump started this project in January. He has said that this system will start working by 2029. The command of the project has been handed over to Senior General of the US Space Force Michael Gutlen.
Trump wants to make Canada the 51st state of America
Trump has many times talked about making Canada the 51st state of America. Carney met Trump at the White House in May last year. During this time, Carney had clearly told Trump that Canada is not for sale.
In fact, during the meeting, Trump had said that if Canada joins America, the people there will get lower taxes, better security and better health facilities.
To this, Carney responded to Trump by saying that just as some places in real estate are never for sale, Canada too is never for sale.
He said that the building in which he is sitting or places like Buckingham Palace have never been sold, in the same way Canada has never been sold and will never be sold.
Carney also said that the thinking of Canadians will not change on this issue and that Canada will never become a part of America.
