The US and Russian Presidents, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, will meet on Friday to talk about Ukraine War on an American airbase in Alaska. This is the first summit meeting between an existing American and the Russian President in more than four years, which has increased the expectations significantly. Russia

For Putin, which have been isolated from the West since the invasion, this meeting is a chance to carry forward the strict conditions of Russia. In a draft Shanti Yojana released in June, Russia told Ukraine to remove its army from Kherason, Lugonsk, Zaporizia and Donatsk regions- which Russia declared its own in 2022. Ukraine rejected it. Russia has also demanded that Ukraine Army be stopped, leave the ambition to join NATO, and the western countries should immediately stop supply of weapons.

Critics say it is like Ukraine’s surrender. Along with the land, Russia wants Ukraine to ensure the ‘rights and freedom’ of the Russian-speaking population and stop the ‘glory of Nazism’. Russia also wants the Western restrictions to be lifted.

Ukraine

Ukrainian President Valodimir Jailonsky will not attend this meeting, but he has said that there can be no peace agreement without his participation. He described this meeting as Putin’s ‘personal victory’. Ukraine has demanded an unconditional ceasefire in the land, sea and sky as a condition of peace talks.

He is demanding to release all the prisoners from both sides and return the Ukrainian children whom he says that Russia has illegally abducted. Ukraine says that after the war started, Russia took thousands of Ukrainian children to its occupied areas, adopted them in Russian families and gave them Russian citizenship.

Russia dismisses the allegations of kidnapping but believes that thousands of children are in its area. Ukraine states that any agreement should include security guarantee to prevent future Russian attacks, and there should be no restriction on the deployment of his army. He says that restrictions on Russia should be gradually lifted and they can be re-imposed if needed.

America

Trump promised to end the war in ’24 hours’ as soon as he took office in January. But despite the passing of eight months and several conversations with Putin and many tours of American messenger Steve Witchoff, he has not been able to take any major concession from Kremlin. This meeting is the first time for them to get a personally compromised.

Trump said on Wednesday that if Russia did not stop the attack, it would have to suffer ‘very serious consequences’. Initially Trump had said that some ‘land swap’ could be done in the conversation, but after talking to European leaders on Wednesday, he softened the statement.

Trump said that he would like to see ‘very, very soon a ceasefire’. Trump said, ‘If the first meeting is fine, then we will soon do the second’, and indicated that Jailonsky could attend the next meeting.

Europe

Despite providing military help to Ukraine and giving shelter to millions of Ukrainian refugees, European leaders are excluded from peace talks that can affect the security system of the region in the future. European representatives were neither invited to the Russia-Ukraine talks of the last three Istanbul era nor at the Russia-US meeting held in Riyadh in February.

In a statement last week, leaders of Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland and European Commission warned that no meaningful peace is possible without Ukraine’s participation. French President Emmanuel Macron said after talking to Trump on Wednesday, “Only the Ukrainian President can talk and do on the regional issues related to Ukraine.”

Macron and British Prime Minister Kir Stmper have indicated that they are willing to deploy peace soldiers in Ukraine after the end of the fight, but Russia has rejected the idea in strict words.
