Pakistan will give Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of the country’s major civilian honours, to two Mumbai doctors who kept the information about the serious illness of its founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah a secret. Both the doctors, after examining Jinnah’s X-ray in 1946, informed him that he had severe TB. Pakistan’s Planning Minister and Chairman of the Awards Committee, Ahsan Iqbal said on social media that both the doctors will be honored. He said that the doctors did not tell anyone about Jinnah’s illness and at that time ‘quietly but shouldered a huge responsibility’. Who were the two doctors? Both the doctors belonged to the Parsi community of Mumbai. Dr. JR Patel and Dr. JA Dhaybho-Ku examined Jinnah’s X-rays in 1946. It was revealed that Jinnah had severe TB. According to the book Freedom at Midnight, doctors thought that Jinnah had only 1 to 2 years left. Very few people knew about his illness. These included his sister Fatima Jinnah and both the doctors. ‘If Jinnah’s illness had come to light, Pakistan would not have been formed’. Hiding the matter of Jinnah’s illness is often seen in connection with the partition of India and the formation of Pakistan. Pakistan Minister Ahsan Iqbal told that former British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten had said that if he had known at that time that Jinnah was seriously ill, he could have postponed India’s independence by a few months. According to him, if this had happened then perhaps Pakistan would not have been formed. However, it cannot be said with certainty that the formation of Pakistan would have stopped if Jinnah’s illness had surfaced.
