Japan on Wednesday deployed Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to capture bears in several areas. According to bear department officials, the terror of bears is increasing in the hilly areas here.
There have been more than 100 bear attacks across the country since April, resulting in 12 deaths. Most of the deaths occurred in Akita Prefecture and the neighboring city of Iwate. Bear sightings in Akita have increased sixfold this year to more than 8,000.
When the situation went out of control, the governor of the province sought the help of the army. On Wednesday, SDF soldiers arrived in the city of Kazuno, where they are assisting local authorities in setting steel traps to catch bears.
At the same time, the task of killing bears has been entrusted to trained hunters. To avoid these, officials have advised people to keep bells outside their houses, so that bears do not come near the house after hearing the loud sound.

Many schools were closed due to fear of bear attack
The 30 thousand residents living in Kazuno city are being advised to stay away from the forest, not to leave the house at night, keep bells and use loud sounds to scare away bears.
People of the city told the media that, ‘Earlier the bears used to run away after hearing the noise, but now they come towards humans. These have become very scary. I feel scared of them’
Mayor Shinji Sasamoto said that due to fear, people have stopped going out and many events have also been postponed. In addition to Kazuno, the army will also support the cities of Odate and Kitakita by the end of November.
Bear attacks have extended to supermarkets, nearby resorts, bus stops and school campuses. Some schools here have been temporarily closed.

Bears are moving to cities in search of food
According to the Environment Ministry, forests have decreased due to climate change. Even in the remaining forests, bears do not get enough food, due to which they turn to cities in search of food. Bears make the most attacks before hibernation in October-November.
There are two species of bears found in Japan. These include the Asian black bear and the Hokkaido bear. Black bears weigh up to 130 kg and Hokkaido’s brown bears weigh up to 400 kg.
Rules for killing bears in the country were relaxed. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kei Sato said, ‘Bears are now entering populated areas every day and attacks are increasing. We have to take immediate action.
Soldiers were deployed to control the deer
This is not the first time that Japan has deployed soldiers to control wild animals. Earlier too, Army’s help was taken in controlling deer and seal.
About a decade ago, the Army conducted aerial surveillance to hunt wild deer and in the 1960s, sea lions were killed for fishing.
