Top commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Zakir Ahmed Ghani was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir. On Wednesday, security forces recovered his body.

After receiving information about the hiding of terrorists, the army started the operation in Chanapora area on Saturday evening. Zakir Ghani’s body was recovered on the fifth day of the operation. Another terrorist Latif Bhat is feared to be hiding.

Zakir Ghani was included in the list of 14 terrorists, which was released by the security agencies after the Pahalgam terror attack. This joint operation was carried out by the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF.

Operation against terrorists continues for 5 days

After receiving intelligence information about the hiding of terrorists, a cordon and search operation was started in Chanapora area from Saturday evening.

Army’s 44 RR, 20 RR, 34 RR, 55 RR, 3 Para, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and 14 and 178 battalions of CRPF are involved in the operation.

The Army’s elite anti-terrorism unit, ‘Victor Force’, deployed additional troops to block all possible escape routes through the dense trees of the garden and also made lighting arrangements in the area. Security forces have been continuously conducting search operations in the villages and surrounding areas for the last several days.

Zakir was a resident of Kulgam

According to sources, Zakir was a resident of Matalhama in Kulgam. He was active in South Kashmir and Pir Panjal region since 2023. Zakir’s name was also linked to many terrorist attacks related to Pakistan.

In October 2025, the NIA court had issued a notice against him and recently his name was also linked to the investigation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack of April 2026. After the Pahalgam attack, security agencies had released a list of 14 terrorists in Kashmir and their houses were also demolished.

According to security records, Zakir has been associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba since 2024, while Latif joined LeT last year.

9 out of 14 local terrorists killed, now search for 5

If Zakir Ghani’s death is confirmed, he will be the 9th terrorist who has been killed by the security forces. Of the 14 terrorists whose list was released, 9 including Zakir Ghani have been killed so far. 6 terrorists were killed during encounters in Shopian and Pulwama in May 2025.

Major operations of Army conducted after Pahalgam attack

  • Operation Sindoor 7 May 2025: 9 terrorist hideouts destroyed in Pakistan and PoK. According to the Indian government, more than 100 terrorists were killed. Many hideouts of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba were targeted. 6 soldiers were martyred, but this information was released later.
  • Operation Keller 13 May 2025: This operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles, Indian Army, J&K Police in Shukel-Keller and Shopian. 3 Lashkar terrorists killed. Top commander Shahid Kutte was included in these. His death dealt a major blow to the Lashkar network in South Kashmir.
  • Operation Mahadev 28 July 2025: It was carried out jointly by Rashtriya Rifles, Para Special Forces, CRPF, J&K Police in Harwan-Dachigam (Mahadev Ridge), Srinagar. 3 Pakistani terrorists (Sulaiman Shah/Faisal Jatt, Abu Hamza Yasir/Jibran) were killed. The government had described them as involved in the Pahalgam attack.
  • Operation Akhal August 2025: Indian Army, J&K Police and CRPF jointly conducted the operation in Akhal forest in Kulgam area. Three terrorists were killed in this. Security forces had taken action against the module operating in the forests of South Kashmir.
  • Operation Guddar 7–17 September 2025: Chinar Corps, CRPF, SOG, J&K Police had conducted the operation in Guddar forest in Kulgam. Two terrorists were killed in this. Also, two army soldiers Subedar Prabhat Gaur and Lance Naik Narendra Sindhu were martyred.
  • Operation Sherowali June 2026: There are a series of anti-terrorist operations in South Kashmir. It has been going on for a long time. In this, the helpers of terrorists are also being caught. Terrorist hideouts are being searched and destroyed. The operation is currently going on.
