Omar Abdullah’s government is preparing to restore the 150-year-old Darbar Move tradition in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources associated with the Jammu and Kashmir Ministry told Dainik Bhaskar that a decision on the restoration of the Darbar Move tradition may be taken in the next cabinet meeting of the Abdullah government.

The logic behind its resumption is that the closure of this tradition has had a negative impact on business in Jammu. Jammu needs Darbar move.

The 152-year-old Darbar Move related to transfer of the capital between Srinagar and Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir was scrapped by LG Manoj Sinha in June 2021.

The Darbar Move tradition was started in 1872 by Maharaja Ranbir Singh of the Dogra dynasty of Jammu and Kashmir. When summer came, he used to shift the capital of Jammu and Kashmir to Srinagar. And when winters came, we used to shift to Jammu.

This was done to avoid severe cold and severe heat. Due to the transfer of the capital, business in both Srinagar and Jammu remained booming for 6-6 months.

King Ranbir Singh of the Dogra dynasty officially started the Darbar Move tradition.

Farooq Abdullah tried to stop the tradition, there was protest In the year 1987, the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had tried to stop this tradition. He had also issued orders to keep the secretariat in Srinagar for the whole year. But his decision was strongly opposed. There were massive demonstrations in Jammu. Later Farooq had to withdraw his order.

The court did not move even during Covid. In 2020, for the first time in history, the court did not move in Jammu and Kashmir. During that time, the government had taken this decision after the situations arising due to Corona virus.

Although the annual Darbar was opened in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, on May 4, but the employees remained where they were. During this period, the Secretariat office worked in both Jammu and Srinagar.

The administration had canceled the allotment of houses allotted in the names of employees for Darbar Move in June 2021 after the completion of digitization of records of offices of more than three dozen departments.

These businessmen were very angry. When the Darbar came to Jammu in winter, thousands of employees from Kashmir and their families used to come to Jammu. There was hustle and bustle in the markets of Jammu for six months. This increased sales significantly.

During that time, the administration had claimed that by stopping the Darbar move, the government exchequer would save more than Rs 150-200 crore annually.

Every year in the first week of November the roads in Jammu leading to the Civil Secretariat were repaired. Bad traffic signals were improved. Hundreds of office premises were decorated.
