The Election Commission (ECI) has issued strict instructions for political parties and candidates ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Now it will be necessary to take permission from the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) before any political ad on social media and electronic platforms.
This instruction will be applicable for the elections to be held in five states Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and by-elections in six states.
According to the Commission, without certification, no political advertisement will be released on TV, radio, audio-video display in public places, e-paper, bulk SMS/voice messages, internet and social media platforms.

The Election Commission has directed MCMC to keep a close watch on the cases of paid news and take necessary action. It will also be mandatory for the candidates to provide information about all their official social media accounts in their nomination form.

Under Section 77(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and the directions of the Supreme Court, political parties have to submit complete expenditure details within 75 days of the end of the elections. This will include all expenses related to advertising, content creation and account operation on the internet and social media.
On March 19, the Commission also held a meeting with officials of all election-bound states and representatives of social media platforms to control fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

Elections in 5 states in April
Assembly elections are to be held in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal in April. Voting will take place in Bengal in two phases on 23rd and 29th April. Elections will be held in single phase in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.
