China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun has been implicated in allegations of corruption in the Chinese military. After this, investigation has been started against him.

According to a report by the Financial Times on November 27, China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun has been implicated in these allegations as part of an anti-corruption drive targeting senior officials of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

According to the report, China fears that the Chinese army is becoming weak due to corruption. Therefore, anti-corruption drive is being run in the Chinese Army from 2023. Under this, nine PLA generals and many officers have been removed so far.

Earlier, the Communist Party had also made similar allegations against Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe.

Same allegations were made against two defense ministers earlier too

Dong was made the Defense Minister of China in the year 2023. Before this, Li Shangfu was the Defense Minister of China. Lee was removed from his post only after 7 months of assuming office. He was missing after giving a speech at a program on 29 August 2023. After which, in September, he was removed from the post of Defense Minister. According to the Communist Party, Li had committed irregularities in the purchase of military equipment.

Earlier in 2023, Wei Fenghe was also expelled from the Communist Party on charges of discipline violation. Wei was accused of breaking the trust of the party, tarnishing the reputation of the army and taking huge bribes.

Dong did not meet the US Defense Secretary last week

Dong oversees China’s military diplomacy as Defense Minister. At last week’s defense ministers’ meeting in Laos, Dong refused to meet with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Then the reason behind this was said to be America’s policies regarding Taiwan. However, during commander-level talks in September, Dong extended his hand to improve relations between the US and China.

Xi Jinping was not included in the State Council and CMC

Generally, in China, the Defense Minister is made a member of the 6-member Central Military Commission (CMC) and the State Council. During the Communist Party convention this year, Dong was not made a member of the CMC. After this, during the cabinet reshuffle in March, he was not even made a member of the State Council.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is trying to eliminate corruption from the PLA. So that preparations can be made for future conflicts. The main focus of this investigation is the PLA Rocket Force, which maintains China’s nuclear missile arsenal.

In July, Sun Jinming, an officer of the same force, was also dismissed from the Communist Party. He was accused of violating party discipline and laws.
