Despite the ban on the production and use of plastic and its products, especially single-use plastic and carry bags, its use and sale continues openly across the country. This is having a dangerous impact on the environment and on human health as well as the health of animals.
.
Regarding this matter, two school students Bhavyaam Raj and Tejaswin Raj have filed a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana High Court through advocate Himanshu Raj. Hearing the petition, the division bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Khetarpal told the Central Government,
Notices have been issued to the Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana Government, Home Secretary of Chandigarh, Director of Environment and Pollution Control Department, Police Chief, Municipal Corporation Commissioner and companies involved in plastic production and trade. The court has directed all the defendants to file their replies by December 17.
Allegations leveled against online companies also
The petitioners alleged that major online companies like Flipkart, Amazon, Meesho, Myntra and Swiggy are using single-use plastic and thermocol. This plastic waste is adversely affecting the health of animals. Many times animals swallow these plastic products, due to which plastic accumulates in their stomach and they die.
Plastic material being sold openly in the markets
It has been said in the petition that plastic products are being sold indiscriminately in the markets and every shopkeeper is using polythene. No action is being taken by the police and health department, which is a contempt of the ban orders.
Demand of petitioners
The petitioners have appealed to the High Court to completely stop the production, sale and use of banned plastic materials. Also, instructions should be given to the concerned departments to ensure that the ban on plastic is strictly followed.
