TLP is taking out a march in Islamabad today. To stop this, the government blocked major roads leading to the capital and stopped mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Violence broke out when an attempt was made to arrest TLP leader.

The protest began when Punjab Police raided the TLP headquarters late on Thursday night and tried to arrest its leader Saad Rizvi. Many people were injured in the clashes during this period, including about a dozen policemen.

Police said that roads in and out of the city have been closed. To stop the riots, police were deployed on major roads and the red zone containing government offices and foreign embassies was completely sealed.

Section 144 is in force across Punjab for 10 days, which prohibits the gathering of four or more people and displaying weapons. However, prayers, weddings, funerals, offices and courts have been exempted.

TLP was established in 2017

TLP was founded in 2017 by Khadim Hussain Rizvi. He used to work in the religious department of Punjab, but was fired from the job in 2011 for supporting Mumtaz Qadri, who murdered Salman Taseer.

Following Qadri’s conviction in 2016, TLP launched nationwide protests on the issue of blasphemy. Khadim also made provocative statements against France. After his death, son Saad Rizvi took over the organization in 2023.
