Stepping out of the college world and into corporate life is often more challenging than expected for freshers. On paper, the 9 to 6 shift in cities like Noida seems very orderly, but in reality behind it lies the bitter truth of long working hours, mental fatigue and hardly any personal time. For many youth, the real meaning of work-life balance is completely different from what they imagine.
‘Reality check’ of first job
A first job not only increases your bank balance, it also provides a ‘reality check’ as to where your time and energy is actually being spent. What appears to be a 9 to 6 job is actually much more tiring and long lasting. Noida A young consultant based in Mumbai shared how the workload takes away your personal peace of mind even after office hours are over.
21 year old Aditya Srivastava came to Noida about six months ago. Aditya says that the idea of going to office on time is a bit misleading. The office may start at 9 am but the day starts much earlier with getting ready, hustling and mentally preparing for work. As the day progresses, the fatigue increases so much that upon returning home one hardly has the courage to do anything else.
The challenge is mental fatigue, not physical fatigue.
According to Aditya, fatigue after office is not just of the body. The mental pressure of the day, maintaining focus and living up to expectations completely exhausts a person. The result is that the evening time, once reserved for hobbies or relaxation, passes without any work or productivity.
Along with corporate life, living alone in a new city further increases this challenge. Cooking, managing household chores and maintaining a routine alone adds a different kind of pressure. For new professionals, this is not only a period of learning the work but also of learning to take care of themselves.
It is important to create your world after 6 pm
With time, Aditya understood that work-life balance does not come automatically, it has to be created with hard work. Now he deliberately takes out time after office for his health, personal growth and skill development. They say that what you do after 6 pm is as important as the work done during office hours.
