The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026 took place in Glasgow, Scotland. Two-time Olympic medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain led the 126-member Indian contingent carrying the tricolor at the Ovo Hydro Arena.
Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla opened the games. After this, players from 74 countries including India took part in the march-past.
The start of the Games was also excellent for India. Even before the opening ceremony, Indian players made a winning start by registering two wins in lawn bowls. On the other hand, Indian flag bearer Lovlina Borgohain has secured at least bronze in the women’s 75 kg category by directly reaching the semi-finals without even playing a match.

Started with the culture of Scotland, King Charles inaugurated
The opening ceremony began with a special video on the culture, history and heritage of Scotland. After this King Charles and Queen Camilla reached the Arena. Prime Minister Andy Burnham was also present with him. The national anthem of the United Kingdom, ‘God Save Our King’, was presented and then the players from all 74 countries and territories marched-past one by one.
India landed with 126 players
India has sent a team of 126 players to these games which will run from 23 July to 2 August. The opening ceremony took place at the Ovo Hydro Arena in Glasgow, where about 13 thousand spectators were present. This time the Indian team will present challenge in 10 sports including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, lawn bowls.
