The Polaris Dawn mission carried astronauts aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule.

SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew is returning to Earth today, September 15. The Dragon spacecraft will land on the Dry Tortugas coast of Florida at 1:06 p.m. SpaceX has begun live streaming the event an hour before splashdown.

The Polaris Dawn mission was launched on September 10 by Elon Musk’s company’s Falcon-9 rocket. In this 5-day mission, the 4 astronauts went to an orbit (1,408.1 km) that no astronaut has gone to in more than 50 years. Now they are returning.

The hardest part of the mission is yet to come

The most difficult part of any space mission is returning to Earth. To get home safely, the Crew Dragon capsule will begin a “de-orbit burn.” The spacecraft will enter Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 27,000 kilometers per hour.

The collision with the air will create friction and the temperature will reach 1,900 degrees Celsius. The heat shield fitted under the 4-meter wide Dragon spacecraft will protect the astronauts from this temperature. As the spacecraft descends, its speed will be slowed down.

To slow down its speed further, parachutes will be opened and landing will take place in water. A rescue team will already be present there on a special boat. Before removing the astronauts from the capsule, the rescue team will do a final safety check and then take them from water to land.

Two astronauts did a spacewalk 700 km above

The purpose of this mission was the first private extravehicular activity (spacewalk). Along with this, 36 research and experiments related to human health were also done in this mission. On September 12, 2 astronauts did a spacewalk about 700 kilometers above the Earth.

Mission commander Jared Isaacman and mission specialist Sarah Gillis went out for a spacewalk for about 10 minutes. After the spacewalk, the spacecraft’s hatch was closed. During the spacewalk, the spacecraft’s speed was 25,000 km per hour.

Mission commander Jared Isaacman was the first to exit the spacecraft for the spacewalk. After him, mission specialist Sarah Gillis did the spacewalk.

These astronauts are involved in the mission…

Falcon-9 is the world’s first orbital class reusable rocket

The Falcon 9 is a reusable, two-stage rocket built by SpaceX to carry astronauts and payloads to Earth orbit and beyond.

The Dragon spacecraft is capable of carrying 7 astronauts into space. It is the only private spacecraft that takes humans to the space station. Dragon’s first test flight took place in 2010.

Polaris program: Polaris Dawn is the first of three planned missions

Polaris Dawn is the first of three planned missions in the Polaris program, funded by Jared Isaacman. If all goes according to plan, the third Polaris flight will be Starship’s first crewed mission. Starship is the world’s most powerful rocket, which is undergoing testing.
