The bench hearing the RG Kar rape-murder case in the Calcutta High Court recused itself from the case. Justice Raja Shekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay said during the hearing on Tuesday that due to other matters we are not able to give time to this case.

During the hearing, the CBI also presented its investigation report. On this, the victim’s family said that no new investigation has been conducted by the agency. In fact, in May, the court had asked CBI to investigate the case afresh.

The High Court said that this is an important matter. The whole world is watching it. Therefore, it is important to get sufficient time for this matter. We have informed the Chief Justice about our decision to recuse ourselves from the case. They will take a decision on this now. If needed, a commission will also be formed for this.

A trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on the night of August 8-9 last year. The doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall on the morning of 9 August.

After the hearing, the victim’s mother Ratna Debnath said- ‘I have met the Chief Justice. Now I will also talk to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in this matter.

In this case, the victim’s mother Ratna Debnath is an MLA from Panihati, West Bengal. He defeated TMC’s Tirthankar Ghosh by 28,826 votes.

Sanjay Roy guilty of rape-murder of doctor

In this case, the doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall on the morning of August. On the basis of CCTV footage, the police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy.

The court had convicted Sanjay on January 18, 2025. On January 20, 2025, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. CBI and the victim’s family had sought death penalty. There was anger across the country including Kolkata regarding this incident. Medical services were at a standstill in Bengal for more than 2 months.
