Before becoming the mayor of Kathmandu, Balendra Shah, which people know as Balen, appeared in Nepal’s underground hip-hop scene. Sometimes we used to bat in the roofs and sometimes make music videos. Issues of poverty, backwardness and corruption were raised in his songs.
These songs made him extremely popular among the youth. Leaders were often insulted in his rap, but people were shocked when Balen announced to contest for the post of Mayor from Kathmandu in May 2022.
Balen used to promote black blazer, black jeans and black sunglasses, which was discussed a lot. Only 33-year-old Balen, who contested the independent elections, defeated big veterans in the election. He became the first person to win the election of the mayor as a surprise candidate.
The status of the Mayor of Kathmandu in Nepal is considered more than many Union Ministers. In such a situation, this victory was discussed not only in Nepal, but all over the world. Balen’s victory was called ‘Balen Effect’ in Nepal. The effect of this was that in the general election to be held in November 2022, a wave of young independent candidates arose. Youth left the bright profession like business, doctors, airlines and entered into politics.
Everyone promised that they would compete with the old, corrupt political class, which has been occupied by the elderly leaders for decades. It also showed its effect in the election held after six months. 25 young leaders came to Parliament.
Balen Shah is also being accused that he is misleading the youth against the government, but his immense popularity on social media shows that many youths have started considering him as the next Prime Minister.

Rabi Lamichhane- Protesters liberated from jail
Lamichane is extremely popular among the youth of Nepal. He was the first TV journalist and became famous with the style of asking corrupt leaders directly and difficult questions. He set a Guinness World Record in 2013 by running a consecutive talk shows for more than 62 hours. Then programs like ‘Siddha Kura Janata Sang’ became the voice of the people against corruption.
In 2022, he left TV and entered politics and formed the Rashtriya Swatantra Party. His party surprised everyone by winning 20 seats in the election. He himself also registered a big victory and became the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister after a few months.

Rabi Lamichhane formed a party and contested for the first time. His party got 20 seats.
But success did not last long. His citizenship was questioned in January 2023. It was alleged that after leaving American citizenship, he did not take Nepali citizenship again properly. The Supreme Court canceled his election and he moved from the post of minister. However, he later completed the formalities and won the by -election again, this time with a bigger margin.
But the disputes do not leave them. Sometimes the journalists were responsible for suicide, sometimes there were allegations of having double passports, sometimes of disturbances in government contracts. He was also accused that his foundation misused the amount received for hospitals.
The most serious matter came when he was implicated in the cooperative fraud case. He was arrested in April 2025 following the High Court order and the Supreme Court also upheld his custody, stating that there was a threat of tampering of evidence.
He was waiting for the trial in jail that there was a wave of anti -corruption protests in the country and people forcibly liberated him from jail. Now he is also considered a contender for power.

Kulman Ghising- Eliminates electricity problem in Nepal
Kulman worn is known to eliminate the problem of power cuts in Nepal. In 2016, when he became the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the power problem was common in the country. There was power cuts for 18–18 hours. In the next 2 years, he almost eliminated the power problem across the country.
Due to his achievement, he came to be called ‘Engineer of Ujyalo Nepal’, that is, Nepal was called the path of light. Nepal started exporting electricity to India in 2023-24 in Kulman’s leadership. For the first time, he made NEA out of the deficit and made profits.
In March 2025, the government suddenly dismissed Kulman. In fact, he refused to waive the outstanding electricity bill of Rs 24 billion of industrialists. Angered by this, the government took action against him. There was a lot of controversy over his dismissal. This increased his popularity across the country.

He then started the ‘Ujyalo Nepal’ campaign, due to which the youth treated towards him. He traveled to Bahrain, UAE, and Qatar in 2025 and gathered the support of the migrant Nepalis. Now he is also a contender for the interim PM of Nepal.

Sanduk Rite- Supporters of Jane Ji Movement
Sanduk Rite is a famous eye specialist in Nepal. Rit started a small incision cataract surgery, which reduced the cost of surgery. This method was adopted in countries around the world. After this, he became famous as ‘God of Site’ i.e. ‘God of Darshan’.
Rit established the Tilganga Eye Science Institute in 1994, which treats 2500 patients every week. It has 40% surgery free. He has returned the eyesight of 1.8 lakh people by creating cataract surgery in his career.

Sanduk Rite has popularity worldwide.
Countries such as Australia, Bahrain and India have their contacts, which make their international image strong. However, Rite has never held any political position. There was talk of making him President in 2023, on which he said that the post of President is not for me. Sanduk has supported the Jane Ji movement.
Dr. Rit has received honors like Ramon Magsaysay Award (2006), Padma Shri (2018), Jesus Award (2023), National Merit Award of Bhutan (2015), National Talent Award (2019) of Nepal.

Gyanendra Shah- The last king of Nepal
Gyanendra Shah became king for the first time in 1950–51 at the age of just 3. At that time his grandfather Tribhuvan fled to India and the royal family was in crisis. Then the Rana rulers placed a young age Gyanendra on the throne so that the rule could be run easily. However, a few months later Tribhuvan returned and he became the king again.
After this, Gyanendra remained in the shadow for a long time. On 1 June 2001, his elder brother Raja Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and several royal family members were killed in the royal massacre. After this tragedy, suddenly Gyanendra Shah had to take over the throne of Nepal. This moment became the source of his second and biggest political return.
The 240 -year -old monarchy was abolished in Nepal in 2008 and democracy was restored. Gyanendra had to vacate the palace. After this, Gyanendra remained silent for a long time, but came into the discussion again in recent years.

The demand for making Gyanendra Shah a king again has been going on for the last 2 years.
Disappointed with democracy, especially Hindu nationalist organizations, have intensified the demand for the return of the monarchy by making him a symbol. Slogans are raised in their rallies – “Come, save the country.” Now amidst the collapse of the Oli government and the current political crisis, he is being considered as the next PM contender.
