The Olympics began in Paris on 26 July.
During the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris on July 26, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) misidentified the South Korean team as the North Korean team. According to news agency Reuters, when the South Korean players were waving their country’s flag on a boat floating in the Seine River, the IOC announcer referred to the South Korean team as the ‘Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’ in both English and French.
This is the official name of North Korea. South Korea had expressed its displeasure over this. Now the IOC has apologized to the team for this mistake and has assured that this will not happen again.
South Korea’s Deputy Minister of Sports and Culture Jung Mi-ran said that IOC President Thomas Bach apologized to South Korean President Yun Suk-yol on Saturday. The IOC also wrote about this incident on social media that they want to apologize for this mistake.

Such a mistake was made in 2012 as well
Earlier, the South Korean Olympic Committee had said that it would lodge a protest against this with the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee and the IOC. The South Korean Olympic Committee had demanded accountability to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams on Saturday described the mistake as very disappointing. He said that it was an operational mistake. We can only apologize for this that this mistake happened at such a prominent moment.
This is not the first time that confusion has arisen between South Korea and North Korea at the Olympics. A similar incident had occurred earlier at the London Olympics in 2012.
Then the flag of South Korea was shown along with the flag of North Korea’s women’s football team on the screen of the stadium in Glasgow. After this, the organizers apologized for this and called it a human error.
Tension between North and South for 75 years
Japan occupied Korea between 1910 and 1945. After Japan’s defeat, Korea was divided into two parts. Russia and China began to have influence over North Korea, while America’s influence over South Korea increased.
A war broke out between the two countries in June 1950. America helped South Korea in this. Since then, tension between the two countries continues even today.
