Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee has been awarded the honorary doctorate degree of ‘Doctor of Letters’ (D.Litt.) by Australia’s La Trobe University. Rani Mukherjee appeared emotional while receiving this honor on stage. He was given the honor at a ceremony held on August 14 during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026 at Federation Square, Melbourne. Rani has received this highest award for her career spanning three decades and her contribution to films based on social issues. She has become the second Indian artist after Shahrukh Khan to receive this honor from La Trobe University. La Trobe University, the second Indian artist to receive the honor after Shahrukh, had earlier in 2019 given an honorary doctorate to Shahrukh Khan for his contribution to cinema and social work and had announced a PhD scholarship in his name. University Chancellor John Brumby AO said that Rani Mukherjee’s work has sparked discussion on topics such as social justice, equality and inclusion, rather than just being limited to entertainment. The university appreciated her continuous work for women, children and underprivileged communities. Chose risky roles right from the beginning: Rani Mukherjee Accepting the honor at the ceremony, Rani Mukherjee said it was one of the most humbling and emotional moments of her life. As a child, she wanted to make her parents and country proud and cinema became the medium to fulfill that dream. Rani told that she has chosen risky roles since the beginning of her career. She always became a part of such stories which first touched her heart and inspired people. Special honor for excellence in acting: Rani Mukherjee was also given a special citation at IFFM 2026 for her excellent acting and global recognition. Festival director Mitu Bhowmik Lange said the honor is a celebration of Rani’s art and the power of cinema that connects two countries. The festival, which runs from 13 to 23 August, is showcasing the influence of Indian films and stories. Career spanning three decades and films on social issues Rani Mukherjee started her career in the 1990s. He worked in hit films like ‘Ghulam’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Hum Tum’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ and ‘Yuva’. After this, she firmly put issues like gender justice, women’s rights, inclusion of disabled people and social change on the big screen through films like ‘Black’, ‘Mardaani’ franchise, ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘Hichki’ and ‘Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway’.
