Viransh Bhanushali is studying law at Oxford University (UK). He was born in Mumbai.
There was a debate between Indian and Pakistani students in Britain’s famous Oxford Union Society. In this debate, Mumbai student Viransh Bhanushali took part from the Indian side and Musa Harraj from the Pakistani side.
This debate took place on 27 November, the video of which is now viral on social media. The title of the debate was ‘India’s Policy Towards Pakistan is a Populist Strategy Sold as Security Policy’.
During the debate, Bhanushali described Mumbai’s 26/11 attacks as a bitter lesson and said that we have learned the hard way that you cannot embarrass a country (Pakistan) which has no shame.
Viransh said- India’s policy is not of show off, but of security.
During the debate, Musa Harraj raised questions on the Indian side. He said- Whenever there is any problem in India, Pakistan is blamed for everything. The Indian government wants to get the support of the people by showing fear in the name of Pakistan. Is this security or just politics?
On this Viransh Bhanushali gave a logical answer. He said- I am from Mumbai. I have seen the 26/11 attacks happening before my eyes. That night my aunt passed through the same station where the terrorists attacked. She survived by chance, but 166 people could not. Would you call this politics?
Harraj again asked – But violence happens in every country. Is it necessary to adopt a strict policy every time? Is this not the way to please the public?
Bhanushali replied- If thefts were happening around the house, wouldn’t you lock the door? Is locking for show or security? India’s policy is also similar.
‘Terrorism was imposed on India’
During the debate, Bhanushali said that to win this debate, I do not need a speech, just a calendar. While counting the dates, he asked which election was there when the Mumbai blasts took place in 1993? 26/11 happened in 2008, which election was there then? Pathankot, Uri, Pulwama, did all this happen just for votes? No, these attacks happened because terrorism was continuously imposed on India.
On this Harraj said- If it is so, then why did India not fight after 26/11? What if the danger was so great?
Bhanushali replied- Because India showed responsibility. There was a lot of public anger at that time. If the government just wanted to be popular, it would have attacked immediately. But India maintained restraint, provided evidence, showed the world who was guilty. This was not politics, this was wisdom.
Then Bhanushali asked – Did that restraint bring peace? No. Even after that Pathankot, Uri and Pulwama happened. So we have to take our security seriously.
Viransh said- Tourists were killed after asking their religion in Pahalgam
Harraj said that you (India) still hold Pakistan responsible for every incident. Is this correct?
Bhanushali replied- Recently in Pahalgam, tourists were killed after asking about their religion. They didn’t ask who they voted for. They were just Indians. Is this also politics?
After this he took a jibe at Pakistan. He said- If real sham politics exists anywhere, it is in Pakistan. When India takes any action, we investigate. But there it is made a celebration and spectacle. When you cannot give bread to your people, you show them a spectacle.
‘India does not want terrorism but peace’
During the debate, Harraj said, so does India want war? On this Viransh Bhanushali clearly said no. India does not want war. We want to live as peaceful neighbours. We want trade, exchange of energy and products. But we cannot remain silent as long as terrorism is used as a policy.
In the end he said that if saving the lives of our people is called popular, then yes, we are popular. But this is not politics, this is responsibility.
India-Pakistan debate was canceled in November itself
A day before the debate between Viransh and Musa Harraj, the India-Pakistan debate at Oxford Union was cancelled. Speakers from Pakistan and India were to participate in this debate.
Now both the countries accused each other of withdrawing from the meeting. Earlier, Pakistan had claimed that the Indian speakers had fled at the last moment before the debate at Oxford Union, hence they got a ‘walkover’ (victory without a fight).
After this, Indian senior advocate J Sai Deepak termed the allegations as false and revealed that the Pakistani team itself did not participate in the debate at the last moment, after which the debate had to be cancelled.
