Sadhna had worked in about 30 films in her film career, although she did not receive any award for acting.
In the 60s and 70s of Hindi cinema, there came an actress who made a special place in the hearts of the audience with her beauty, acting and style. Name was Sadhna Shivdasani. Sometimes his films were hits and his hairstyle trended all over the country, but in the last phase of his life he had to face illness, financial crisis and loneliness.
Sadhna was born on 2 September 1941 in a Sindhi family in Karachi, British India. After the partition of 1947, his family came to India and settled in Mumbai. Sadhna wanted to become an actress since childhood. At the age of 14, she got a chance to work in Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Shree 420’, where she was seen as a background dancer in the song ‘Mud Mud Ke’.
Sadhna’s father was a big fan of Bengali actress and dancer Sadhna Bose, so he named his daughter Sadhna.
Film journey started with a fee of 1 rupee
Sadhna’s acting career started with the film ‘Abana’. Which was India’s first Sindhi film. This film was released in 1958.
It is said that he got only Rs 1 fee for this film. This small fee later became the beginning of his big film journey.
‘Love in Shimla’ changed fate
Sadhna got special recognition from the 1960 film ‘Love in Shimla’. R.K. In this film directed by Nayyar, she was in the lead role with Joy Mukherjee. The film was successful and Sadhna became an overnight star.
Her fringe hairstyle became so popular in the film that it later came to be known as ‘Sadhana Cut’. Common women also adopted this look inspired by Audrey Hepburn. Sadhna is also credited with popularizing the trend of churidar salwar suits.
Famous actor Hari Shivdasani (father of actress Babita) was Sadhana’s maternal uncle (father’s brother). Due to this relationship, Sadhna was like an aunt to Karisma and Kareena Kapoor.
After this, Sadhna worked in films like ‘Parakh’, ‘Hum Doon’, ‘Man-Mauji’, ‘Ek Musafir Ek Haseena’, ‘Mere Mehboob’ and ‘Intekaam’. In the 1960s, 19 of her films were released, out of which 11 were hits and thus she became a big star of Hindi cinema.
Fell in love with director, married in 1966
On the sets of ‘Love in Shimla’, Sadhna was introduced to director R.K. Fell in love with Nayyar. Both of them got married in 1966. Even after marriage, Sadhna continued working in films. However, in his later years his life started becoming difficult.
In the late 1960s, Sadhana started suffering from the problem of hyperthyroidism. Due to treatment, he had to stay away from films and many big projects were lost from his hands. Later he made a comeback with films like ‘Intekaam’ and ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’, but in the 1970s his film offers became less.
He also tried his hand in direction with ‘Geeta Mera Naam’ in 1974. Gradually she moved away from films and public life.
Sadhna’s husband R.K. Nayyar had directed many films like ‘Love in Shimla’ (1960), ‘Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke’ (1963), ‘Aao Pyar Karein’ (1964).
Loneliness increased after husband’s death
In 1995, R.K. Nayyar passed away. Both of them had no children. After her husband’s departure, Sadhna became quite lonely. His health also continued to deteriorate. Due to problems like eye problems and thyroid, his going out of the house reduced.
However, his last years were also surrounded by legal controversies. Three cases related to Sadhna came to light. One of these cases was done by Yusuf Lakdawala, the landlord of his building in Santa Cruz. Sadhna had filed a case against him alleging harassment. After this, a defamation case related to the controversy also came to light.
At that time Sadhna was struggling with financial and physical problems. It was becoming difficult for him to bear the treatment and legal expenses. He also appealed for help, but he did not get the expected support.

In later times, her contemporary actresses like Waheeda Rehman, Nanda, Asha Parekh and Helen remained close to her and supported her emotionally. Despite this, the last phase of Sadhana was spent in complete loneliness. Sadhna died on 25 December 2015 in a hospital in Mumbai after an illness.
