Omar Abdullah said that the decision to give statehood to Jammu and Kashmir has to be taken by PM Modi and Home Minister Shah.
Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah said that sharing power with the Lieutenant Governor in Jammu and Kashmir is like a ‘recipe for destruction’. He said that the double power center system would never work. Omar said this in an interview with PTI on Saturday.
He said- I just want to say that having double power center at any place can cause disaster. No organization can function properly if there are many power centers. This is why our sports team has one captain, not two.
In the interview, Omar talked about keeping his promise to the central government. He said that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir should be restored as soon as possible. The Central Government had abolished the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on 5 August 2019. During this time it was divided into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Abdullah said-
Like a sports team, the Indian government does not have two Prime Ministers or two centers of power. In most parts of the country, there is an elected CM, who has the authority to take decisions along with his cabinet.

Omar said – sharing power with LG is a bitter and controversial experience
Giving the example of Delhi, Omar said that the government here shares power with the Lieutenant Governor. This is a bitter and controversial experience. Delhi is a small state, whereas Jammu and Kashmir is a large and strategic area bordering China and Pakistan.
He said- In the last two months, since I have not been the CM, I have not yet found a single example where Jammu and Kashmir has got any benefit from being a Union Territory. There is not a single example where the work of governance or development has gone to Jammu and Kashmir because it is a Union Territory.
Abdullah said that elections could be held in Jammu and Kashmir only due to the intervention of the Supreme Court. It is unfortunate for us that the Supreme Court gave such an ambiguous decision on the question of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah admitted that he had a backup plan in case Jammu and Kashmir remained a hybrid state. He said it would be foolish of me not to have a backup plan.
People came out to vote on the Centre’s promise
Omar said that the central government promised the people of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Because of this people came out to vote. During the election campaign, people were repeatedly told that statehood would be restored to Jammu and Kashmir, but you (Central Government) did not say that statehood would be restored if the BJP government is formed or if the Chief Minister is elected from Jammu. Statehood will be restored. I think this promise will be fulfilled.
The decision on granting statehood is to be taken by the PM and the Home Minister. Abdullah said that the final decision to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir had to be taken only by two persons, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. They have to decide whether it should be done and when it should be done. Either this will have to be done or it will have to be made mandatory.
He said Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha handles police, security and law and order, while other administrative responsibilities rest with the elected government.
