Famous historian Yuval Noah Harari has criticized US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview given to The New York Times.

He said that in the history of Israel, there has been no greater enemy of Israeli nationalism than Netanyahu. They have divided the country from within and pitted people against each other.

He said that the thinking of Trump and leaders like him is that the weak should always kneel before the strong, only then will there be peace. This is immoral and foolish because every country will spend its energy only on weapons.

Harari said that the world is rapidly moving towards Trumpism and right-wing politics. Those who practice its politics believe that the world is not run by helping each other but by power and influence. But this thinking is pushing human civilization and the world backward.

Harari said – the world progressed only through cooperation

According to Harari, great civilizations cannot run on the strength of fear or violence alone. To run any large society, shared trust and cooperation is necessary.

But Trumpism and nationalist thinking have different views on this matter. He believes that cooperation between countries can be strong only when people have their own strong national, religious and cultural identity.

According to him, to make a country strong, it is necessary for people to be connected with similar thinking and identity. Sometimes this requires strict authority and strong leadership.

According to Harari, President Trump does not believe in cooperation, he only wants to dominate weaker countries through military power.

Harari said – it is necessary to save nationalism from hatred

Harari says that nationalism has been one of the most successful and positive stories in human history. According to him, the real meaning of nationalism is not to hate other people, but to feel kinship towards millions of unknown people whom you do not know personally, yet you are ready to sacrifice for them.

They say that a nation is neither a family nor a small tribe. In small tribes people know each other personally. But nation is a different thing. There are millions of people living in countries like India, China or Israel and no one knows most of them.

Yet nationalism unites people to such an extent that they pay taxes so that other citizens can get good education and health services. When necessary, people even risk their lives for the country.

Harari believes that sometimes nationalism turns towards hatred, but this is not its core identity. According to him, nationalism can exist without hatred of outsiders, but not without belonging and love for one’s own people.

Harari says that today many of those who call themselves the biggest supporters of nationalism are spreading hatred within the nation. They are dividing their own society more than external enemies.

Giving the example of Israel, Harari says that hardly any leader in the history of the country has divided the society as much as Benjamin Netanyahu.

The world will be ruined if it follows the law of force.

Harari criticized Trumpist thinking, saying that it looks at the world from the perspective of power and dominance. According to this thinking, there can be peace in the world only when weaker countries accept the demands of stronger countries.

They give the example that if the US asks for Greenland, Denmark should hand it over out of fear of American power. If Denmark refuses and a conflict breaks out, then according to this thinking, Denmark will be at fault because it did not listen to the powerful country.

Harari says this thinking creates serious problems. If the world runs only on the rule of strength, then every country will start a race to make itself stronger. Then all the countries will have to spend a large part of their economy and resources on army and weapons.

Harari called AI the biggest threat

Meanwhile, Harari has described AI as the biggest threat in the coming times. He said that nuclear bomb is just a weapon, but AI has the ability to take decisions on its own.

He warned that AI is learning to show love and emotions like humans, even though it does not understand real emotions. In the future, children may spend more time with AI companions than with humans, which may weaken real relationships.

He warned that if AI gets legal power like companies, then humans may lose control over it.
