England defeated Sri Lanka by 190 runs in the Lord’s Test. Chasing a target of 483 runs, Sri Lanka could only score 292 runs on the fourth day. Gus Atkinson from England scored a century in the first innings and then took 5 wickets in the last innings.

Joe Root from England scored centuries in both innings. He also became the player scoring the most centuries from England. Captain Dhananjay de Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne scored fifties from Sri Lanka in the second innings.

England lead the series 2-0
Batting first after losing the toss, England scored 427 runs in the first innings. Sri Lanka could only score 196 runs, thus England got a lead of 231 runs. England scored 251 runs in the second innings, thus Sri Lanka got a target of 483 runs. Sri Lanka showed fight in the second innings, but the team was reduced to 292 runs.

By winning the Lord’s Test, England has taken a 2-0 lead in the series. The team won the first Test by 5 wickets. The third and final Test of the series will be played at The Oval ground in London from September 6.

England remains fourth in the WTC points table
Even after losing 2 Tests to Sri Lanka, England remains fourth in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. The team won 8 out of 15 Tests and lost only 6. One match was drawn, England’s 19 points have been deducted so far due to slow over rate, due to which the team has 81 points.

England played 15 matches, which means that the team could have reached 180 points based on 12 points for a win. But they have only 81 points. According to this, the team is at the fourth position with 45% points. New Zealand is at the third, Australia at the second and India at the first position.

Karunaratne’s half century in the first session
After the first session, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal returned unbeaten from Sri Lanka. Dimuth Karunaratne scored a half-century in the second innings. He scored 55 runs on 129 balls. This is his 38th Test half-century. Nishan Madushka got out after scoring 13 runs, Pathum Nissanka got out after scoring 14 runs and Prabath Jayasuriya got out after scoring 3 runs. Ollie Stone has taken 2 wickets for England so far. Gus Atkinson and Chris Woakes got 1-1 wickets.

Dimuth Karunaratne scored 58 runs.

3 wickets lost in the second session
Sri Lanka tried to recover in the second innings. Chandimal and Mathews held on, but after the wickets of both, the team fell apart. Mathews was out after scoring 36 runs and Chandimal was out after scoring 58 runs. After them, Kamindu Mendis also returned to the pavilion after scoring just 4 runs.

After losing 7 wickets for 200 runs, captain Dhananjay de Silva took over the innings along with Milan Ratnayake. Both of them took the team’s score to 260. After the session ended, de Silva remained unbeaten on 45 runs and Ratnayake on 28 runs.

In the third session of the fourth day, Sri Lanka resumed play from the score of 260/7. England took the second new ball of the innings. Gus Atkinson did his job and got Sri Lankan captain Dhananjay de Silva caught out. De Silva scored 50 runs.

Atkinson took his 5th wicket by taking the wicket of Milan Ratnayake. Ratnayake scored 43 runs. Chris Woakes got Lahiru Kumara caught out and Sri Lanka was all out for 292 runs. Woakes and Ollie Stone got 2-2 wickets, one success went to Shoaib Bashir.

Gus Atkinson took 5 wickets for 62 runs.

England second innings
Apart from Root (103), no other batsman from England could play a big innings in the second innings. Harry Brook scored 37, Jamie Smith scored 26 and Ben Duckett scored 24 runs. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara took 3-3 wickets. Prabath Jayasuriya and Milan Ratnayake took 2-2 wickets.

Root scored 103 runs off 121 balls in the second innings.

Root scored a century on the first day as well

England lost the toss on the first day and elected to bat first. The team lost 6 wickets at a score of 216 runs, but Root stood firm at one end.
