Purwal said – not politics – victory of trust
In a speech after his victory, Purwal addressed his supporters, saying, “This victory is not just about politics, but about the trust that connects us, no matter our caste, religion or identity. Together we can build a city that works for all.”
Aftab Purwal was first elected as the 70th mayor of Cincinnati in 2021, becoming the city’s first Asian-American leader. Born in Xenia, Ohio, Aftab’s mother is Tibetan and father is of Indian origin. Purwal often says that the inspiration for his public life comes from his immigrant background.

My mother came from Tibet as a refugee: Purwal
“My mother came from Tibet as a refugee. My parents did everything they could to give us opportunities and live the American dream,” he said.
Before joining politics, Aftab Purwal worked in the field of law. He was a special assistant to the U.S. Attorney and also served as global brand counsel at Procter & Gamble. In 2016, he was made Clerk of Courts of Hamilton County. He was the first Democrat to hold this position in a hundred years.
He met the 14th Dalai Lama during his visit to Dharamshala, India in the year 2022. At the time he said, “We understand the struggle of the Tibetan people, they are not alone, the world has not forgotten them.”
