Maharashtra assembly elections are likely to be held at the end of the year.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge will visit Sangli district of Maharashtra today. Here they will inaugurate the statue of former minister Patangrao Kadam, who was the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. Kadam died in 2018.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar and Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat, former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan will also be present on the occasion. Apart from this, Maha Vikas Aghadi allies NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray have also been invited for the event.

The term of the BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) government will end in November 2024

  • At present, there is a BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) government in Maharashtra. Its term is ending in November 2024. Elections may be held in October 2024. Elections were held in 2019 for 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra. BJP became the largest party in the state with 106 MLAs.
  • The Shiv Sena and BJP alliance could not reach a consensus over the post of Chief Minister. Shiv Sena with 56 MLAs formed the government by forming the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with 44 Congress and 53 NCP MLAs. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray became the Chief Minister.
  • May 2022 Urban Development Minister in Maharashtra Government and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde rebelled against Uddhav along with 39 MLAs. He joined hands with BJP. On 30 June 2022, Eknath Shinde took oath as the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. BJP made Devendra Fadnavis the Deputy CM.
  • With this, the Shiv Sena party split into two factions. One faction was formed by the Shinde faction and the other by the Uddhav faction. On February 17, 2023, the Election Commission ordered that the party’s name ‘Shiv Sena’ and the party’s election symbol ‘bow and arrow’ will remain with the Eknath Shinde faction.
  • After this, Ajit Pawar rebelled against uncle Sharad Pawar. Ajit joined the Shinde government on 2 July 2023 along with 8 NCP MLAs. He claimed the support of 40 NCP MLAs with him. Ajit was made Deputy CM in the coalition government.

BJP got only 9 seats in the Lok Sabha elections
The BJP won 104 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2019. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance includes current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP. In the Lok Sabha elections 2024, BJP could win only 9 seats out of 48 seats in Maharashtra. NCP (Ajit faction) won one seat. Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) won 7 seats.

On the other hand, Congress, a part of Maha Vikas Aghadi, won 13 seats, Uddhav’s Shiv Sena won 9 seats and Sharad Pawar’s NCP won 8 seats. MVA won a total of 30 seats out of 48. One seat went to an independent.

Both the parties want to repeat the formula of coming together in Chandigarh Mayor and Lok Sabha elections. Congress-AAP had won the Municipal Corporation and Lok Sabha elections in Chandigarh. According to Congress sources, this initiative has been taken by Rahul Gandhi.
