According to the police, the accused was being taken to the crime scene at 3:30 in the morning when he jumped into the pond. His body was found after a two-hour search.

Tafazul Islam, the prime accused in the gangrape of a 14-year-old minor in Assam’s Nagaon district, died of drowning on Saturday (August 24). He had jumped into a pond while trying to escape from police custody.

Nagaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Swapnil Deka said that the accused was arrested on Friday (August 23). Today at 3:30 am, he was being taken to the spot to recreate the crime scene.

According to the SP, he tried to escape and jumped into the pond. The police immediately started a search operation. The SDRF team also reached the spot. After searching for about two hours, the body of the accused was recovered from the pond.

Three people raped a girl returning from tuition
A 14-year-old girl was raped by three men on Thursday (August 22) evening in Dhing, Nagaon. The victim was returning home from tuition on her bicycle. During this time, three men on a motorcycle surrounded her and raped her.

After the rape, the accused fled leaving the victim injured and unconscious on the roadside near a pond. Locals saw her and admitted her to a hospital. The police were also informed.

The third accused is still at large
Police have so far arrested two accused, one of whom died. The search for the third is on. Protests are taking place across Assam after the incident. Many organizations called for a day-long bandh in Dhing on Friday (August 23).

Tension in the area increased further when Police DGP GP Singh reached Dhing. People came out on the streets demanding the arrest of the culprits. Shopkeepers closed their shops. Social organizations and political parties demanded strict action against the culprits and security for women and girls.

Assam CM said- we will not spare anyone

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma wrote on Twitter on Friday (August 23), ‘The incident in Dhing is a crime against humanity. We will not spare anyone and bring the culprits to justice. I have directed the DGP to visit the spot and take action against such monsters as soon as possible.

The case was heard in the Supreme Court on 22 August. During the hearing, the CBI claimed in the court that the crime scene had been tampered with. The court said that the role of Kolkata Police in the case is doubtful. Such negligence in investigation was not seen in its 30-year career.
